Overview

Dalian University of Technology, commonly known in China as Dalian Gong or DUT, is a public, Ministry of Education-affiliated national key university headquartered in Dalian, Liaoning Province. It was established in April 1949 as the School of Engineering of Dalian University, in the early period of the People's Republic of China, with a mission closely tied to national industrial development. When Dalian University was reorganized in July 1950, the engineering school became an independent institution named Dalian Institute of Technology. It adopted its present name, Dalian University of Technology, in March 1988. The university's institutional identity is strongly associated with engineering education, applied science and service to national development. Its motto is commonly rendered in English as “Embrace the world, strive for self-improvement; uphold virtue and pursue learning, integrate knowledge and action.” The university describes its tradition as one of being founded by the Communist Party of China and advancing alongside the country. It combines undergraduate education, postgraduate training, scientific research, technology transfer and international cooperation. DUT is a participant in China's major higher-education development programs. It was designated a national key university in 1960, re-confirmed as a national key university in 1978, and became one of the country's early institutions authorized to award master's and doctoral degrees. It entered the 211 Project in the 1990s and the 985 Project in the early 2000s. In 2017 it was selected as a Class A World-Class University under China's first Double First-Class initiative, and it was included in the second round of the Double First-Class program in 2022. Its current Double First-Class disciplines include mechanics, mechanical engineering, and chemical engineering and technology. The university operates campuses in Dalian and Panjin, including the main campus in Ganjingzi District, a development-zone campus, the historic Yizhongjiu campus in central Dalian, and the Panjin campus in Liaoning. The Panjin campus emphasizes fields including chemical engineering, marine science and technology, life sciences, environmental and ecological science, biomedicine, and economics and business. The institution also has a graduate school, an independent City Institute, specialized innovation and international colleges, and a national university science park. DUT's academic portfolio covers engineering, natural sciences, management, humanities, social sciences, medicine and emerging interdisciplinary areas. Official materials describe dozens of master's and doctoral fields, doctoral professional-degree categories, postdoctoral research stations, and a large portfolio of undergraduate majors. Research strengths include mechanics, materials, chemical engineering, manufacturing, civil and hydraulic engineering, marine systems, artificial intelligence, software, integrated circuits and technology management. The university has also developed a substantial technology-transfer and intellectual-property infrastructure and has participated in industry, government and international research partnerships. Its public-facing identity is primarily educational and institutional rather than commercial. The “Dalian University of Technology” name functions as a university brand representing academic credentials, research capability, alumni networks, professional education and public service. The university also undertakes outreach and recruitment activities, including national admissions promotion and campus-based media placements, but it is not a listed company and does not report commercial brand revenue or stock-market performance.

History

Dalian University of Technology emerged from the founding of Dalian University in the final months before the establishment of the People's Republic of China. Preparatory work brought together educators and scientists including Li Yimang, Qu Bochuan and Shen Qizhen, while efforts were made to recruit scholars from China and overseas. On 15 April 1949, Dalian University was established with an engineering college, a medical college and a research institute. Qu Bochuan led the engineering college, while Li Yimang served as president of the university. In July 1950, Dalian University's institutional structure was dissolved and its constituent units were reorganized. The engineering college became an independent institution named Dalian Institute of Technology, with Qu Bochuan as its first president. During the nationwide higher-education reorganization of the early 1950s, the institution experienced major transfers of departments, staff and research resources. At the same time, it received personnel and academic resources from other universities, including engineering and chemical-engineering resources. The resulting institution concentrated on a smaller group of fields, including chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, hydraulic engineering and mechanics. From the late 1950s, the institute began rebuilding and broadening its academic base. Between 1958 and 1960 it established or re-established areas such as mathematical mechanics, shipbuilding, internal-combustion engineering and electronics. This helped it develop from a relatively focused engineering institution into a broader, multidisciplinary university. In October 1960 it was designated a Ministry of Education national key university. Its teaching and research were disrupted during the Cultural Revolution, but admissions and academic activities resumed after the restoration of the national university entrance examination in 1977. In February 1978 it was again recognized as a national key university. The institution expanded its role in graduate education and international cooperation during the reform era. It became one of the first Chinese institutions authorized to award master's and doctoral degrees in 1981 and established a graduate school in 1986. In 1980, an industrial science and technology management training center was established with Chinese and American participation. The initiative is regarded as an important early development in management education in mainland China and later contributed to the university's professional-management education capabilities. In March 1988 the institute adopted the name Dalian University of Technology. It subsequently entered the 211 Project, began participation in the 985 Project, and was selected for a series of national initiatives concerning international cooperation, innovation education, graduate training and engineering education. The university science park, technology-transfer platforms and intellectual-property programs further connected academic research with industrial and public-sector needs. A major recent development was the creation of the Panjin campus. The Ministry of Education approved its construction in 2012, and the campus became part of the same legal university rather than a separate university. It was designed to develop fields including chemical engineering, marine science, life science, environmental studies, biomedicine and business. The university has also expanded activity in software, artificial intelligence, integrated circuits, marine intelligent systems and other interdisciplinary areas. DUT was selected in 2017 as a Class A World-Class University under the first Double First-Class program and was included in the second round in 2022. The university currently presents itself as a research-intensive institution with a strong engineering core, a wider portfolio of sciences and humanities, several campuses, a graduate school, professional education centers and extensive domestic and international partnerships. Its continuing priorities include talent cultivation, scientific innovation, technology transfer, international engagement and service to national and regional development.
