Overview
GEO&BIO: Proceedings of the National Museum of Natural History (Ukrainian: GEO&BIO: Праці Національного природничого музею) is the flagship scholarly publication of the National Museum of Natural History of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. It is a peer-reviewed, open-access journal covering geology, palaeontology, biology, ecology and natural-history museology, with a particular emphasis on documenting and analysing the diversity of natural objects, the study and management of natural-history collections, and the history and development of museums as scientific and educational centres. The journal is published in Ukrainian and English, appears once or twice a year, and carries the ISSNs 2617-6157 (print) and 2617-6165 (online) with the DOI prefix 10.53452/gb. The journal was founded in 2001 and appeared for many years under the title Visnyk Natsionalnoho naukovo-pryrodnychoho muzeyu (Bulletin of the National Museum of Natural History). During its early period it was an irregular collection issued every two to three years; from 2010 (volume 8) it became an annual, and from 2014 its issues were styled as volumes. In 2016 it was included in Ukraine's list of specialised scientific publications, and in 2018 it was re-registered under the name GEO&BIO, became bilingual (Ukrainian and English) and moved to a twice-yearly schedule. Since 2018 the journal has participated in CrossRef, assigning DOIs to its volumes and individual articles. The publication is issued by the National Museum of Natural History of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (EDRPOU code 19020229, ROR https://ror.org/04ecvhe96). It is an open-access title with no publication fees, follows the principles and recommendations of COPE, WAME and DORA, and maintains policies on editorial process, plagiarism prevention, the use of artificial intelligence, complaints handling, retraction and long-term archiving. It is indexed in Google Scholar and Index Copernicus, among other databases, and maintains a profile in Google Scholar. GEO&BIO's editorial scope spans the geological and biological diversity of Ukraine and beyond, including zoology, botany, plant and animal ecology, conservation science (sozology), palaeontology, geology and museology. A companion publication, Pryrodnycha muzeolohiya (Natural History Museology), has been issued as a supplement. The journal's language policy has shifted markedly since 2014 toward Ukrainian-language articles with an expanding English component, and since 2018 all articles carry extended English summaries and translated captions and bibliographies.
History
GEO&BIO traces its origins to 2001, when the National Museum of Natural History of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine launched its principal scholarly publication under the title Visnyk Natsionalnoho naukovo-pryrodnychoho muzeyu (Bulletin of the National Museum of Natural History). The first issue appeared in 2001, and during the period 2001–2009 the publication was an irregular collection issued roughly once every two to three years. The first issue's title page carried no indication that it was the first number, and subsequent issues were not always numbered consistently; several were double issues, such as No. 2–3 for 2002–2004, No. 4–5 for 2005–2007 and No. 6–7 for 2008–2009. Issues 2–3 and 4–5 were additionally labelled "Botanical Series" with a logo of the "Botanical Museum of the NAS of Ukraine", although no series had ever been approved and the "Botanical Museum of the NAS of Ukraine" was a fictitious institution that never existed. This practice ended with the arrival of a new editor-in-chief and a new executive secretary. From 2010 (issue 8) the publication became an annual, and from 2014 its issues began to be called "volumes" (volume 12). With that same volume the title-page style changed from a book-like format (title only, with the institution as a supra-title and the number and year beneath the title) to a standard journal title page including a title block, volume number with ISSN, and table of contents directly beneath. In 2016 the journal was included in Ukraine's list of specialised scientific publications (decision of the State Attestation Commission of 8 December 2016), and home pages for individual articles were introduced on the journal's website. In 2018 the editorial board was substantially changed, and details of the layout, including running heads, were altered. The publication was re-registered under the name GEO&BIO, became bilingual (Ukrainian and English) and moved to a twice-yearly schedule. Also in 2018 the journal began participating in CrossRef, and volume 16 was prepared with a volume DOI (doi: 10.15407/gb.2018.16) and DOIs for its individual articles (32 CrossRef records for 17 articles). The journal's language policy evolved considerably. For a long time it was multilingual but in practice bilingual (Ukrainian and Russian), with a growing share of Russian-language works and an absence of English-language ones. From 2014 the editorial policy changed to favour Ukrainian-language articles while strengthening the English component in every article (abstracts, figure captions) and attracting authors able to write the main text in English. After re-registration at the end of 2017, the journal published only Ukrainian- and English-language articles, with a steadily increasing English share: all articles carry English summaries extended to 1,000 characters (from 2019, 1,800 characters), translations of all table and figure titles into English, and from 2018 also English translations of Cyrillic bibliographies. For example, volume 10 (2012) contained zero English-language, three Ukrainian-language and five Russian-language articles; volume 12 (2014) had three English, six Ukrainian and two Russian; and volume 14 (2016) had three English, eleven Ukrainian and zero Russian. From 2018 this ratio was embedded in the journal's development programme and registration documents. The 2018 issue included 16 articles, of which 7 were in English and 9 in Ukrainian. The first 2019 issue included 8 Ukrainian-language and 3 English-language works; the following volume 18 had 7 Ukrainian and 4 English works. Volume 19 (2020) contained 5 English and 5 Ukrainian articles plus 2 Ukrainian-language chronicles (memorial articles about the well-known colleagues Valentyna Bibikova and Vadym Topachevsky). The journal maintains a profile in Google Scholar and is registered in several databases representing scholarly publications, including Index Copernicus. According to Google Scholar data as of 1 December 2020, the journal had 462 total bibliographic citations (346 in the last five years), an h-index of 9 for all time (8 for the last five years) and an i10-index of 8 for all time (4 for the last five years). The journal's website is hosted at geobio.museumkiev.org, and the publisher is the National Museum of Natural History of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (EDRPOU code 19020229, ROR https://ror.org/04ecvhe96).
