Overview

Sichuan Provincial Geriatric Hospital (四川省老年医院), also known as Sichuan Fifth People's Hospital (四川省第五人民医院) and Sichuan Provincial Institute of Geriatrics (四川省老年医学研究所), is a government-run, non-profit Grade II-A general hospital located in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China. It operates under the General Office of the CPC Sichuan Provincial Committee and the Sichuan Provincial Health Commission. The hospital traces its origins to 1949, when it began as a health clinic of the Shanxi-Jinsui Military District of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, later moving south with the army and being renamed after the liberation of Chengdu. Over the decades it underwent several reorganizations and name changes, becoming Sichuan Fifth People's Hospital in 1995 and adding the designation Sichuan Provincial Geriatric Hospital in 2008. The hospital is the only provincial-level geriatric hospital in Sichuan. It comprises the Shangye Street campus and the Yangma campus (which operates the medical institution of the Sichuan Provincial Elderly Care Service Center), with 500 authorized beds. Since 2017, it has been managed by West China Hospital of Sichuan University and is branded as the West China Hospital Geriatric Medicine Center, operating as a branch of West China Hospital. This partnership involves deep collaboration in branding, management, technology transfer, human resources, information systems, and two-way referral services. The hospital is a member of the National Clinical Research Center for Geriatric Diseases (West China Hospital) collaborative network and the Sichuan Provincial Clinical Research Center for Geriatric Diseases collaborative network, and participates in numerous West China Hospital specialty alliances. The hospital provides comprehensive medical, healthcare, teaching, research, and preventive services. It has 17 functional departments and 20 first-level clinical and medical technology departments, offering specialized services in bone and joint pain, respiratory and critical care medicine, general surgery and urology, endocrinology and gastroenterology, cardiovascular medicine (including cadre wards), rehabilitation medicine, geriatrics, internal medicine, dentistry, ENT, ophthalmology, and gynecology. It aims to become a leading tertiary hospital for geriatric medicine in western China, serving as a "three centers and two hubs" for geriatric clinical care, medical research, and integrated medical-elderly care demonstration, as well as a hub for geriatric medical education and health technology transfer. The hospital has received numerous awards, including being named a National "Elder-Friendly Hospital" and "Innovative Hospital for Improving Medical Services" in 2020, a "Sichuan Provincial Elder-Friendly Hospital" in 2022, and "Public Hospital High-Quality Development Outstanding Institution Case" in 2023. A new Jinniu campus is under construction, with its first phase expected to open around the end of 2027 with over 400 beds.
