Overview

Tongcheng Travel (同程旅行) is a Chinese online travel agency (OTA) platform brand operated by Tongcheng Travel Holdings Limited, a company listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange under the ticker 0780. The brand traces its origins to Tongcheng, an online travel business founded in Suzhou in 2004, and to eLong, one of China's earliest online hotel and flight booking services. The two businesses merged in 2018 to form Tongcheng-Elong, which was later rebranded as Tongcheng Travel. The platform's core offerings are online booking of flights, hotels, train tickets, intercity bus tickets, attraction tickets and packaged tours, delivered mainly through mobile apps and WeChat mini-programs. A defining feature of the brand is its deep integration with Tencent's ecosystem — WeChat and QQ entry points — which gives it access to large volumes of lower-tier-city and mass-market travellers in China. Tencent Holdings is a major shareholder. Tongcheng Travel positions itself as a mass-market, value-oriented travel platform, with particular strength in non-first-tier cities and in transport ticketing (especially rail), from which it cross-sells hotels and other travel products. It also operates the eLong brand for hotel-focused booking and has expanded into outbound travel, corporate travel and destination services. The brand competes with larger OTAs such as Ctrip/Trip.com Group and Fliggy, differentiating through its transport-led traffic model and its WeChat channel. It is a constituent of Hong Kong-listed Chinese consumer and internet indices and reports its results in RMB.

History

Tongcheng Travel's history combines two Chinese online travel businesses. Tongcheng was founded in Suzhou in 2004 as an online travel booking company, initially focused on attraction tickets and travel products for domestic travellers. eLong was one of China's earliest online hotel and flight booking platforms, founded in the late 1990s and later controlled by Expedia. In 2018, Tongcheng and eLong merged to create Tongcheng-Elong, with Tencent and Expedia among the major shareholders; the combined company listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange that year. After the merger, the company concentrated on mobile-first distribution through Tencent's WeChat and QQ platforms, which provided a large, low-cost traffic channel into lower-tier Chinese cities. It built a transport-led model: users book train or flight tickets, and the platform cross-sells hotels, attraction tickets and other services. This strategy differentiated it from Ctrip/Trip.com Group, which is stronger in higher-income and outbound segments. In the early 2020s the company rebranded from Tongcheng-Elong to Tongcheng Travel, reflecting a unified consumer-facing identity. It continued to expand its hotel inventory, outbound travel offerings and corporate travel services, and invested in destination services and lower-tier-city penetration. The brand remains a major Chinese OTA alongside Ctrip/Trip.com and Fliggy, and is listed in Hong Kong under ticker 0780.
