Overview

Beijing Times Chinese Books Co., Ltd. (时代华语) is a Chinese book publishing and distribution company registered in Beijing on 29 February 2008. It began as a private book distributor and grew into a comprehensive publisher and content company whose catalogue spans high-end current affairs, social sciences and humanities, literature, psychology, business and economics, lifestyle, children's books, and classical texts. The company is closely associated with its chairman Zhu Daping (朱大平) and president Zhu Wenping (朱文平), who have been publicly recognized within China's private publishing sector. The company's early identity was built on high-end current-affairs publishing. In 2010 it formally launched a comprehensive book planning and distribution strategy, expanding from a mainly political and current-affairs list into seven product lines: current affairs, social sciences and humanities, literature, business and economics, lifestyle, children's books, and ancient texts. Its representative works include titles such as 《平易近人:习近平的语言力量(外交卷)》 and 《大国复兴》, and its catalogue features authors and translators including Yu Qiuyu, Su Qin, and Xu Yuanchong. A defining feature of Times Chinese Books is its outbound publishing activity. In 2012 it invested in a wholly owned publishing company in New York, CNTIMES INC. (美国时代出版公司), and in the same year formed Changjiang Times Books Co., Ltd. with Changjiang Literature and Art Publishing House. In 2015 China's press and publication regulator approved the company to participate in a pilot for special outbound publishing, giving it outbound publishing rights; the Beijing Chinese United Publishing Co., Ltd. was subsequently established as a vehicle for building a national copyright export base. Also in 2015, its wholly owned US subsidiary published the English edition of 《习近平时代》, which was promoted through a large-scale campaign in the United States, including a full-page advertisement in The New York Times and outreach to US media, politicians, and business leaders. Today the company operates as a bilingual, outward-facing publisher and distributor, presenting itself under the name Beijing Times Chinese International Media Co., Ltd. (北京时代华语国际传媒股份有限公司) on its official website. It continues to publish and promote new titles across current affairs, AI and technology, psychology, business, and literature, and maintains author columns and recommendation sections on its site.

History

Beijing Times Chinese Books Co., Ltd. was registered on 29 February 2008 and obtained a book distribution licence. In January 2009, chairman Zhu Daping was named one of the "2008 Third Annual Private Publishing Industry Figures of the Year." In January 2010, the company launched a comprehensive book planning and distribution strategy, expanding its product structure from a mainly high-end current-affairs list into seven segments: current affairs, social sciences and humanities, literature, business and economics, lifestyle, children's books, and ancient texts, with all seven product lines developed simultaneously. In January 2011, Zhu Daping received the "2010 Top Five Private Publishing Industry Influential Publishing Planners" award from China Book Business Report and the Books Industry Chamber of the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce. In October 2011, the company was granted nationwide general distribution qualifications for books, newspapers, periodicals, and electronic publications by the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television. In July 2012, the company invested in a wholly owned publishing company in New York, CNTIMES INC. (美国时代出版公司). On 27 July 2012, Changjiang Literature and Art Publishing House and Beijing Times Chinese Books jointly established Changjiang Times Books Co., Ltd., which was inaugurated in Beijing. In February 2014, the company was included in the first batch of the "Beijing Key Headquarters Enterprises Directory." In May 2015, the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television formally approved Beijing Times Chinese Books to participate in the pilot for special outbound publishing, making it the first to obtain outbound special publishing rights. After the establishment of Beijing Chinese United Publishing Co., Ltd., the plan was to use that company as the operating entity to build a Beijing national copyright export base, aiming to move Chinese book copyright exports from scattered deals to integrated, large-scale operations. In September 2015, the English edition of 《习近平时代》 was published by the company's wholly owned US subsidiary, American Times Publishing Company, and generated strong reactions. From March 2015, the US subsidiary hired an experienced public relations team and carried out a series of promotional measures targeting mainstream American society: spending US$100,000 on a full-page colour advertisement in the current-affairs section of The New York Times; contacting more than 300 mainstream US media outlets half a year in advance to interview the author and publisher and publish reviews and book news; inviting more than 20 well-known political commentators to write reviews; and sending copies of 《习近平时代》 and 《习近平说如何读经典》 in English to US President Barack Obama and all cabinet members, members of the Senate and House of Representatives, the representative offices of 192 UN member states, the CEOs of 200 large US multinational corporations, 300 major global media outlets, and major US think tanks — about 1,700 recipients in total — asking them to read, recommend, and write reviews. The campaign drew strong reactions at home and abroad; several members of Congress wrote back praising the book. Hundreds of media outlets including The Wall Street Journal, BBC, People's Daily, and CCTV4 reported on it, often on front pages. The Wall Street Journal published a long review titled "Xi Jinping's Faithful Biography: Shaping an Image of a Free, Democratic and Prosperous China." In January 2016, the company was named by China Publishing & Media Journal and the Private Work Committee of the Publishers Association of China as one of the "2015 Most Influential Private Publishing Institutions." On 15 February 2016, CCTV News interviewed president Zhu Wenping as a representative case of book publishing going global. On 11 July 2016, Vice Mayor Wang Ning visited the company and praised it for using market methods to achieve national strategy. In August 2016, during the Beijing International Book Festival, national leader Liu Yunshan inspected the Beijing Times Chinese Books booth and leafed through titles such as 《中国特色社会主义政治经济学》《大国复兴》《创新驱动中国》. On 20 October 2016, the chairman attended a symposium on book "going out" work as one of six speaking representatives. In subsequent years the company continued to publish across current affairs, technology and AI, psychology, business, and literature, and now presents itself on its official website as Beijing Times Chinese International Media Co., Ltd.
