Overview
Hotel Mikazuki Group (ホテル三日月グループ) is a Japanese hospitality and resort-development company headquartered in Kisarazu, Chiba Prefecture. It operates large-scale hot-spring resort hotels and day-use spa facilities, primarily under the "Mikazuki JAPANESE RESORTS & SPA" banner, with properties in Kisarazu and Nikko-Kinugawa in Japan and a major resort in Da Nang, Vietnam. The group traces its origins to 1959, when the founder Yoshio Odaka established Kominato Hotel Mikazuki. Over the following decades it expanded along the Boso Peninsula, adding properties in Katsuura and Kamogawa, and in 2000 opened the day-use spa "Spa Mikazuki Ryugujo" on the Kisarazu Kaneda coast, which became the Ryugujo Spa Hotel Mikazuki after a hotel wing opened in 2002. The group is known for its large room counts (over 1,000 rooms across its Japanese resorts), its "Kaiun no Yu" gold and platinum baths, and its long-running television commercial song "Sora to Umi no Hotel Mikazuki." In the 2010s it began overseas expansion, culminating in the Da Nang Mikazuki project in Vietnam, described as the largest-ever investment by a Japanese company in that market at the time, with a total investment of 12 billion yen. The group has also diversified into golf, mega-solar power generation, and sustainable resort initiatives. In 2021 it transferred its Katsuura and Kamogawa hotels to Hotel Management International, and in 2023 established Hotel Mikazuki Holdings. The current group representative is Yoshimune Odaka.
History
Hotel Mikazuki Group traces its origins to 1959, when Yoshio Odaka established Kominato Hotel Mikazuki. In 1961, Katsuura Hotel Mikazuki was founded. In 1984, the Showa Emperor stayed at Katsuura Hotel Mikazuki. In 1996, a hot spring was successfully drilled at Katsuura Hotel Mikazuki, creating "Katsuura Mikazuki Onsen." In 2000, the group opened "Spa Mikazuki Ryugujo," a day-use hot spring facility on a 30,000-tsubo site on the Kisarazu Kaneda coast. In 2002, a hotel wing opened at the facility, becoming "Ryugujo Spa Hotel Mikazuki." In 2007, following the merger of Amatsukominato Town into Kamogawa City, Kominato Hotel Mikazuki was renamed "Kamogawa Hotel Mikazuki." In 2009, the group acquired Kinugawa Hotel New Okabe from Shin Hotel New Shiobara Co., Ltd., and opened it as "Kinugawa Hotel Mikazuki" on September 1. In 2016, a new wing "Fujimitei" with 219 rooms, all featuring terraces and semi-open-air baths, opened at Ryugujo Spa Hotel Mikazuki. In 2019, the group began construction on the 12 billion yen Da Nang project in Vietnam, the largest investment by a Japanese company at that time; it also introduced "Water Island," Chiba Prefecture's first sea/coastal athletic facility, in Katsuura and Kamogawa, and opened the large bath at Katsuura Hotel Mikazuki free of charge to victims of Typhoon Faxai. In 2020, at the request of the Japanese government, the group accepted 191 Japanese nationals returning from Wuhan, China on a charter flight from January 29 to February 13 at Katsuura Hotel Mikazuki; no infections were confirmed among the returnees or staff, and operations resumed on March 1 after disinfection and cleaning. The group was closed in April-May due to a state of emergency request, and developed the "Mikazuki STANDARD" infection-control protocol with the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare and Kameda Medical Center, reopening all domestic properties sequentially from June to July. In July 2020, Kinugawa Hotel Mikazuki underwent seismic retrofitting and added "Opu-ro," a swimwear-friendly bath, and was renamed "Nikko Kinugawa Spa Hotel Mikazuki." In December 2020, "Mikazuki Water Park 365," Asia's largest all-weather spa dome, opened in Da Nang, Vietnam. In 2021, the "Nikko Toshogu Bunrei Mikoshi," the only portable shrine in the world to enshrine the spirit of Tokugawa Ieyasu, was completed. In December 2021, Katsuura Hotel Mikazuki and Kamogawa Hotel Mikazuki were transferred to Hotel Management International and renamed "Mikazuki Sea Park Hotel Katsuura" and "Mikazuki Sea Park Hotel Awa-Kamogawa." In June 2022, Da Nang Mikazuki held its grand opening. In 2023, Hotel Mikazuki Holdings was established. In April 2024, the group announced its Sustainable Resort Plan and began operating Japan's first land-based shrimp farming at a resort hotel. In July 2024, collaboration rooms with local railway companies Kominato Railway, Isumi Railway, and Choshi Electric Railway opened at Ryugujo Spa Hotel Mikazuki "Ryugutei," along with a lobby reusing Isumi Railway train cars and Kominato Railway bus vehicles. In August 2024, the group opened "Wa no Ie," a employment support service for people with disabilities. In January 2025, the group entered the aircraft leasing business and appointed non-family presidents at each operating company.
