Overview

Co-op Sapporo is a consumer co-operative (seikyo) that Hokkaido residents can join. It operates more than 100 stores in Hokkaido and runs the Tokk home-delivery system, alongside activities in child-rearing support, environment, and welfare. It was established in 1965 as Sapporo Citizens' Co-op and began operations on October 1, 1965 with two stores.

History

Co-op Sapporo was established in 1965, when chain stores were rapidly expanding, by consumers aiming to create a distribution network that would protect consumers' interests. It was founded as Sapporo Citizens' Co-op at a meeting of about 200 local residents and Hokkaido University Co-op staff held at Sapporo Municipal Kitazono Elementary School gymnasium. Its stores were two locations: the Daigakumura branch received from the Hokkaido University Co-op and the first floor of the Hokkaido University Co-op Sosen staff dormitory rented from the same co-op. It began operations on October 1, 1965 with 1,181 members and 32 officers and employees. In 1969 the corporate name was changed to Co-op Citizens' Co-op (生活協同組合市民生協). In 1970 it merged with Asahikawa Citizens' Co-op and Otaru Citizens' Co-op. In 1978 it merged with Hokkaido Central Citizens' Co-op (formerly Sorachi Citizens' Co-op) and Hakodate Citizens' Co-op. In 1979 it merged with Makomanai Danchi Consumers' Co-operative. In 1983 it merged with Shibetsu Co-op. In 1986 the Ishikari food processing factory was completed and began operation. In 2015, at its 50th anniversary, it carried out a brand switch and unified its brand color in green and white tones, adopting the theme 'Tsunagu' (connecting).
