History
The journal «Древняя Русь. Вопросы медиевистики» was founded on 24 March 2000 by Russian medievalists with the aim of uniting in one publication materials from researchers of different profiles studying Old Rus: historians and source scholars, folklorists and literary historians, linguists, art historians, archaeologists, and representatives of other specialties, for a comprehensive study of problems at the intersection of disciplines. The publication is funded by the medievalists themselves, and the editorial board works on a voluntary basis. The first issue appeared in September 2000, and the journal has been published quarterly since then. Since 2001, the editorial board, together with other scientific centers (Institute of Slavic Studies RAS, Institute of Russian History RAS, State Tretyakov Gallery, Institute of Russian Language RAS) and with the support of the Russian Humanitarian Scientific Fund and the Department of Historical and Philological Sciences of RAS, has held the international scientific conference «Комплексный подход в изучении Древней Руси» every two years. In 2005, an electronic version of the journal appeared, which stimulated the creation of electronic versions of similar publications. The journal's website provides free access to materials from the beginning of its publication. Initially, the journal practiced discussing published materials at round tables, usually quarterly. However, since 2006, the need arose to hold them more frequently. Now both published works and those being prepared for publication are brought up for discussion. Specialists interested in the problems under consideration are invited to participate in the round tables, which are now held monthly. Since 2012, round tables for young scholars have also been held. Information about past round tables is published on the website. Since 2009, the journal's materials (archive from 2005) have been transferred to the Scientific Electronic Library elibrary.ru. In 2010, a catalog of scientific Internet resources dedicated to Old Rus was placed on the website. The publication is included in the list of leading peer-reviewed scientific journals in which, by decision of the Higher Attestation Commission of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, the main scientific results of dissertations for the degrees of Doctor and Candidate of Sciences must be published, and in the list of scientific journals recognized by the Church-wide Postgraduate and Doctoral Studies named after Saints Cyril and Methodius as leading periodicals in which the results of research by applicants for church academic degrees of Candidate and Doctor of Theology must be published. In April 2014, Ivan Sterligov, director of the Scientometric Center of HSE, during the XV April International Scientific Conference «Modernization of Science and Society», reported that in a study conducted by HSE scientists through an expert survey of 56 historians (selected by 11 «top-level» historians) and subsequent analysis of 887 questionnaires on 66 historical journals, the journal «Древняя Русь.
