Overview
Česká společnost pro údržbu (ČSPÚ), in English the Czech Society for Maintenance, is a Czech professional association that brings together individuals and organisations involved in the care and management of physical assets, with a particular focus on maintenance management, asset management and facility management. It was founded in 2000 under the name Sdružení podnikové údržby (Association of Industrial Maintenance, SPÚ), registered by the Czech Ministry of the Interior as a civic association of natural and legal persons, and led by PhDr. Jan Nový, CSc. In 2001 the name was changed to Česká společnost pro údržbu to align with the naming conventions of the national maintenance societies within the European Federation of National Maintenance Societies (EFNMS). The society is headquartered in Prague and operates as a registered association (zapsaný spolek, z.s.) under Czech law. It describes itself as an independent, non-political organisation whose purpose is to develop, gather and disseminate new knowledge in the field of asset management and maintenance, to serve the professional needs of its members, to support organisations in achieving success, and to improve the management of assets and, in particular, of production equipment. Its stated vision is to be a recognised centre for the development, acquisition and dissemination of knowledge supporting organisational success in asset and maintenance management, especially for machinery and equipment. ČSPÚ's activities centre on education, certification and professional exchange. The society runs certified courses such as Maintenance Manager (Manažer údržby), Maintenance Technician (Technik údržby) and Maintenance Master (Mistr údržby), together with seminars on topics including preventive and predictive maintenance, spare-parts inventory management, pneumatic systems, frequency converters, and documentation for the safe operation of technical and special equipment. It also offers audits and analyses, and organises the annual international professional conference ÚDRŽBA (Maintenance), which by 2026 was in its 22nd edition. The society publishes news and a newsletter on maintenance topics and maintains an events archive. Membership is open to both individual and collective members from academia and industry; the society reports more than 120 individual and collective members. Governance rests with an elected předsednictvo (board/presidium), which is the statutory body. ČSPÚ became an observer of EFNMS in 2003 and a full member in 2006. Its leadership has included prof. Ing. Václav Legát, DrSc. as chairman from 2007, with Ing. Zdeněk Votava as executive director; Ing. Jan Hroch became executive director in 2017, and in 2020 prof. Ing. Martin Pexa, Ph.D. was elected chairman, at which point the society's mission was extended to include research and development activity in the area of Maintenance 4.0. The society also maintains an ethical code binding on all members and employees.
History
Česká společnost pro údržbu (ČSPÚ) began its activity in 2000 as Sdružení podnikové údržby (SPÚ), the Association of Industrial Maintenance. It was registered by the Czech Ministry of the Interior (file no. 41824/99-R) as a civic association of natural and legal persons under Section 6 of Act No. 83/1990 Coll., and it was led by PhDr. Jan Nový, CSc. The founding impulse was to create a Czech professional body dedicated to the care and management of physical assets and, in particular, to maintenance management. In 2001, in line with the naming conventions of the national maintenance organisations within the European Federation of National Maintenance Societies (EFNMS), the association changed its name to Česká společnost pro údržbu. This aligned the Czech society with its European counterparts and marked the beginning of its integration into the European maintenance community. In 2003 ČSPÚ became an observer of EFNMS, and in 2006 it was accepted as a full member of the federation. Leadership evolved over the following years. In March 2007 the board elected prof. Ing. Václav Legát, DrSc. as chairman, and Ing. Zdeněk Votava was appointed executive director. In 2017, after Ing. Votava stepped down, Ing. Jan Hroch was appointed executive director. In 2020 the most recent leadership change took place: prof. Ing. Martin Pexa, Ph.D. was elected chairman, and at the same time the society's mission was broadened to include research and development activity in the field of Maintenance 4.0. The society's legal form also evolved. It is now a registered association (zapsaný spolek, z.s.) entered in the association register maintained by the Municipal Court in Prague (Slezská 2000/9, 120 00 Prague), section L, insert 10434. Its statutes were issued in a third complete wording dated 12 June 2014, incorporating amendments approved by the general assembly on 11 November 2015, 20 April 2017 and 3 September 2020. The statutory body is the předsednictvo (board/presidium). Throughout its existence ČSPÚ has focused on education, certification and the exchange of professional knowledge. It organises certified courses for maintenance managers, technicians and masters, runs seminars on topics such as preventive and predictive maintenance, spare-parts inventory management, pneumatic systems and frequency converters, and provides audits and analyses. Its annual international professional conference ÚDRŽBA has become a recurring fixture; by 2026 it was in its 22nd edition. The society also publishes news and a newsletter and maintains an archive of events. It reports more than 120 individual and collective members drawn from academia and industry, and it has adopted an ethical code that is binding on all members and employees.
