Overview
Čakavski sabor (Chakavian Assembly) is a Croatian cultural organization established on 8 June 1969 in Žminj, Istria. It was founded as an independent cultural body to unite citizens against unitary language tendencies and to revitalize the Chakavian dialect in culture, science, and creative work. The initiative was driven by Zvane Črnja, a prominent Istrian writer and cultural activist. The organization emerged in response to cultural policy challenges in Istria, aiming to preserve local identity and linguistic diversity within Croatia. Since its founding, Čakavski sabor has organized numerous scholarly conferences, cultural events, and restoration projects. In September 1969, it held its first scientific meeting dedicated to Chakavian poetry. During the 1970s, it established departments in Pazin, Labin, Buzet, Novi Vinodolski, Roč, Poreč, as well as larger centers like Opatija, Pula, and Split. In 1976, the organization initiated the creation of the Glagolitic Alley (Aleja glagoljaša), a monument to Old Church Slavonic script connecting the towns of Hum and Roč. The organization continues to be active, with recent events including the restoration of the Glagolitic Alley and various cultural programs. Čakavski sabor operates as a non-profit cultural institution, not a commercial brand. It publishes books, organizes exhibitions, and manages memorial sites such as the Glagolitic Lapidarium. Its work is primarily funded through public and cultural grants. The organization remains a key custodian of Chakavian heritage and Istrian cultural identity.
History
Čakavski sabor was founded on 8 June 1969 in Žminj, Croatia, as a people's assembly for national poetry. It was established as an independent cultural unit to unite citizens against unitary language tendencies and to activate the Chakavian dialect in culture, science, and creativity. The initiator and main driving force was Zvane Črnja, a prominent Istrian writer and cultural figure. Plans were developed to address cultural policy issues in Istria. Soon after its formation, on 12 and 13 September 1969, the first scientific meeting dedicated to Chakavian poetry was held. This led to the creation in the early 1970s of a council intended to carry out a wide range of cultural and artistic events, professional conferences, restoration work in Istrian towns, and cultural programs to preserve national cultural identity. As a result of the council's work, departments of Čakavski sabor were opened and began operating in the 1970s in Pazin, Labin, Buzet, Novi Vinodolski, Roč, Poreč, as well as larger centers such as Opatija, Pula, and Split. In 1976, on the initiative of the assembly, a decision was made to create the Glagolitic Alley (Aleja glagoljaša), connecting Hum, the smallest town in the world, and the village of Roč, as a monument to the Old Church Slavonic script. The organization has continued its activities into the 21st century, focusing on cultural preservation, scholarly research, and restoration projects. Recent events include the restoration of the Glagolitic Alley, conferences on Istrian linguists, and various publications. Čakavski sabor remains a key institution for the promotion of Chakavian heritage and Istrian identity.
