Overview
The Überetscher Hütte (Italian: Rifugio Oltradige al Roen) is a mountain hut located at 1,775 metres above sea level on a small terrace just north-east of the summit of the Roen (2,116 m) in the Nonsberg group of the South Tyrolean Alps, Italy. It lies within the municipality of Tramin. The hut is owned and managed by the Sektion Bozen of the Club Alpino Italiano (CAI). The hut was built by the Sektion Überetsch of the German and Austrian Alpine Club (DuOeAV), which was founded in 1910. Construction was completed in August 1912, and the official inauguration took place on 27 July 1913. It was one of the last huts built by a South Tyrolean section of the DuOeAV. Originally it offered two guest rooms and 14 sleeping places. After World War I, the hut was expropriated by the Italian state and in 1923 was handed over to the CAI Sektion Bozen, which has operated it ever since. Today the Überetscher Hütte is a popular destination for hikers and mountaineers. It can be reached most easily from the Mendel Pass to the north via the Roenalm (Malga Romeno), or by trails from Altenburg and Tramin. From the hut, a secured via ferrata leads to the summit of the Roen, and a path heads south to the Schwarzer Kopf. The hut offers warm meals, overnight accommodation, and panoramic views. As of the 2020s, it is run by Martina and Andrea, who continue the tradition of hospitality. The hut celebrated its 110th anniversary in 2023, marking over a century of service to mountain enthusiasts.
History
The Überetscher Hütte was built by the Sektion Überetsch of the German and Austrian Alpine Club (DuOeAV), which was founded in 1910. It was the only section hut of this club. Construction was completed in August 1912, and the hut was officially inaugurated on 27 July 1913. It was one of the last huts to be built by a South Tyrolean section of the DuOeAV. The original building had two guest rooms and 14 sleeping places, and it was managed from the beginning. After World War I, the hut was expropriated by the Italian state. In 1923, it was handed over to the Sektion Bozen of the Club Alpino Italiano (CAI), which has owned and operated it since. The hut has been continuously maintained and run as a mountain refuge. In 2013, it celebrated its 100th anniversary, and a book was published: "100 anni Rifugio Oltradige al Roen – 100 Jahre Überetscher Hütte: 1913–2013" by Vito Brigadoi. As of the 2020s, the hut is run by Martina and Andrea, who continue the tradition of hospitality.
