History

The history of the Raiffeisen cooperatives in Austria is described as a 130-year success story that began in the 19th century and remains inseparably linked with Austria's economic development. The cooperative idea itself emerged in the 19th century, with Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen (1818–1888) as one of its key pioneers. Raiffeisen's idea was taken up in Austria: in 1886 the first Raiffeisenkasse was founded in Mühldorf bei Spitz an der Donau. Ten years later the number of savings and loan banks according to the Raiffeisen system had already grown to around 600. Since the end of the 19th century, Raiffeisen's development in Austria has been inseparably linked with the country's history. Today around 1,400 independent cooperatives active in various fields, with around two million co-owners, form the basis of the Austrian Raiffeisen Group, alongside a number of supra-regional affiliated companies owned by several cooperatives and a significant number of shareholdings at home and abroad.
