Overview
The Österreichische Bundesverlag (öbv) is one of Austria's largest educational providers and a leading publisher of teaching and learning materials. According to its own corporate profile, it offers a portfolio of around 2,600 titles and more than 52,000 digital materials, ranging from classic schoolbooks to digital classroom content and support services for teachers. Its stated mission, "Wir leben Bildung" ("We live education"), dates back to its founding in 1772, when Maria Theresa established it as a schoolbook publisher. Since 2007 the öbv has been part of the Stuttgart-based Klett Gruppe. The publisher's catalogue spans primary and secondary education. Well-known series include Deutsch Sprach-Lese-Buch, way2go!, Zeitbilder, Rechenrabe Trax, Alles Geschichte!, Physik verstehen, Lasso Englisch, Starke Seiten Deutsch, Lösungswege and BioTOP. Alongside printed textbooks, the öbv develops e-books, digital teacher's manuals, digital media packages and learning apps, and it operates a marketplace for digital products. It also runs webinars and professional-development events for teachers, covering topics such as classroom community, artificial intelligence in teaching and English learning with the Planet Pop platform. One of its best-known publications is the Österreichisches Wörterbuch, the official Austrian dictionary commissioned by the Austrian education ministry and based on the official Austrian rulebook. The company has a long and eventful history: it was run as a GmbH from 1979 and as a holding from 1993, and in 2002 it was privatised and sold to the German Ernst Klett Verlag. In March 2007 the Glöckler family sold its 47 percent stake in the schoolbook publisher öbvhpt Verlagsgesellschaft mbH & Co. KG to the Österreichischer Bundesverlag (Verlagsgruppe Klett), which had previously held 53 percent. Today the öbv presents itself as an active shaper of the education system, combining centuries of experience with a focus on knowledge preparation, didactics and digitalisation.
History
The Österreichische Bundesverlag (öbv) traces its origins to 1772, when Maria Theresa founded it as a schoolbook publisher. Over the following centuries it became one of Austria's central institutions for educational publishing, producing textbooks and reference works for the Austrian school system. Its best-known publication is the Österreichisches Wörterbuch, the official Austrian dictionary issued on behalf of the Austrian education ministry and based on the official Austrian rulebook. In the late 20th century the publisher was restructured several times. From 1979 it was run as a GmbH, and from 1993 as a holding company. Within that holding, the ÖBV Pädagogische Verlag operated as a separate company. In 1998 this pedagogical publisher was merged with the publishers Hölder-Pichler-Tempsky and Österreichischer Gewerbeverlag to form the öbv & hpt Verlagsgesellschaft mbH & Co. KG. The holding also included Deuticke Verlag, the Perlen-Reihe, Residenz Verlag and Brandstätter Verlag, and it held stakes in the children's book publisher Esslinger J.F. Schreiber and in C.J. Bucher Verlag. In 2002 the Bundesverlag was privatised and sold to the German Ernst Klett Verlag. As part of that transaction, the Residenz Verlag was sold on to the Niederösterreichisches Pressehaus, and the book-trade division was also sold and continued as an independent company. In March 2007 the Glöckler family (Hölder-Pichler-Tempsky, Verlag für Schule und Wissenschaft) sold its 47 percent stake in the Austrian schoolbook publisher öbvhpt Verlagsgesellschaft mbH & Co. KG to the Österreichischer Bundesverlag (Verlagsgruppe Klett), which had until then held 53 percent. As a result of this separation, the Verlag Hölder-Pichler-Tempsky received the book titles for the vocational education sector, while the G&G Kinder- und Jugendbuchverlag (also owned by the Glöckler family) took over the learning-aids division from öbvhpt. Since 2007 the öbv has been part of the Stuttgart-based Klett Gruppe. In its current form it describes itself as one of Austria's largest educational companies, with a portfolio of around 2,600 titles and more than 52,000 digital materials. It publishes classic schoolbooks alongside e-books, digital teacher's manuals, digital media packages and learning apps, and it runs a marketplace for digital products as well as webinars and professional-development events for teachers. Its stated mission, "Wir leben Bildung", emphasises educational quality for all and a contribution to fairness of opportunity in the education system.
