Overview

The Österreichische Gesellschaft für Gefässchirurgie (ÖGG), rendered in English as the Austrian Society for Vascular Surgery and also known as the Gesellschaft für Vasculäre und Endovasculäre Chirurgie, is an Austrian professional association headquartered in Vienna. It was founded in 1968 and, according to its own records, counted roughly 220 members as of 2011. Its stated purpose is to advance research and to support the professional and social development of the field of vascular surgery, including teaching and patient care, without pursuing economic profit and in the spirit of the common good. The society pursues these aims through scientific congresses, personal contact among its members and other appropriate means. Its activities extend across the whole federal territory of Austria. As the first German-language specialist society in its field, the ÖGG served as a model for the German Society for Vascular Surgery and the Swiss Society for Vascular Surgery, with which it jointly organizes a congress every three years. The ÖGG is governed by a board (Vorstand), an extended board or advisory council (Beirat), a general assembly (Hauptversammlung), an arbitration tribunal (Schiedsgericht) and auditors (Kassenrevisoren). Its membership is structured into ordinary, affiliated, corresponding, honorary and supporting members. Ordinary members are persons in Austria or abroad who work in vascular surgery; affiliated members are those active in research, teaching or practice in the broader vascular-surgical environment; corresponding members are distinguished physicians and scientists elected by the general assembly; honorary members are personalities who have rendered outstanding services to angiological-vascular-surgical research and to the society's goals; and supporting members may be individuals, legal persons or companies with a particular interest in the advancement of medical science and practice. Among the supporting corporate members recorded in 2011 were Asanus Medizintechnik GmbH, B. Braun Melsungen, C. R. Bard GmbH, Bayer AG, BY WASS GmbH, Ethicon, MAC's Medical Group, Maquet GmbH & Co KG, UCB S.A., Vascutek Deutschland GmbH, W. L. Gore & Associates and Johannes Zodl Jotec. The society also periodically awards the Hans von Haberer Ehrenurkunde, an honorary certificate named after the famous deceased Austrian surgeon Hans von Haberer, given exclusively to representatives of business and industry for special services and achievements in promoting vascular surgery in Austria.

As the first German-language specialist society in vascular surgery, the ÖGG served as a model for the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Gefäßchirurgie (German Society for Vascular Surgery) and the Schweizerische Gesellschaft für Gefäßchirurgie (Swiss Society for Vascular Surgery).
