ÖRAG Rechtsschutzversicherungs-AG is a German legal expenses insurance company headquartered in Düsseldorf. It was founded on 1 April 1970 by the public insurers (öffentliche Versicherer) with the aim of offering their customers comprehensive legal protection. The company is a joint venture of the public insurers and their reinsurers, and it acts as the legal protection partner of the Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe. It is part of the ÖRAG/Deutsche Assistance group, which employs more than 1,000 people and serves 12 million customers. ÖRAG focuses on private, corporate, and building owner legal expenses insurance. As of 31 December 2023, it managed more than 2.1 million contracts nationwide, with a premium volume of 423.3 million euros. In the German legal expenses insurance market, it ranks third by number of contracts and fourth by booked premiums. The company also operates meinrecht.de, an internet portal that provides self-service legal services, legal guides, and other offerings to help people resolve legal problems independently. The ÖRAG/Deutsche Assistance group includes several subsidiaries: Deutsche Assistance Versicherung AG, Deutsche Assistance Shared Service GmbH, Deutsche Assistance Service GmbH, Deutsche Assistance Telematik GmbH, and Deutsche Rechtsanwalts Service GmbH. These entities provide assistance services, value-added benefits, and micro-insurance products. The group is the central provider of legal expenses insurance, assistance, value-added services, and micro-insurance for the public insurers. ÖRAG's board of management currently consists of Marcus Hansen (chairman since 1 January 2025), Patricia Körner (since 1 October 2024), and Jörg Funck (since 1 April 2026). The supervisory board is chaired by Wolfgang Breuer, chairman of the board of Provinzial Holding AG. The company is owned almost entirely by the public insurers and their reinsurers, the Verband öffentlicher Versicherer and Deutsche Rück.

ÖRAG Rechtsschutzversicherungs-AG was founded on 1 April 1970 by the public insurers (öffentliche Versicherer) with the goal of providing comprehensive legal protection to their customers. In 1992, the legal protection service center and ÖRAG Service GmbH (today Deutsche Assistance Service GmbH) were added. The latter continues to provide nationwide assistance services for numerous insurance products to the public insurers and their sales partners. In the following years, the range of services was expanded through additional companies, including the lawyer network D.R.S. Deutsche Rechtsanwalts Service GmbH in 2009. Since 2011, Deutsche Assistance Versicherung AG – as a developer of innovative protection letter concepts and micro-insurance as well as account value-added services – and Deutsche Assistance Telematik GmbH – as a provider of call center and services – have been part of the group. The most recent addition is Deutsche Assistance Shared Service GmbH: founded in 2023, it bundles the strengths of the public insurers. As their implementation partner, it provides cross-regional services in the areas of insurance, services, and assistance to the public insurers and their sales partners. In addition, S-Markt & Mehrwert GmbH & Co. KG acts as a service provider and sales partner of the Sparkassen. The shareholders of ÖRAG Rechtsschutzversicherungs-AG are almost all public insurers and their reinsurers (Verband öffentlicher Versicherer and Deutsche Rück). The board of management currently consists of Marcus Hansen (chairman since 1 January 2025), Patricia Körner (since 1 October 2024), and Jörg Funck (since 1 April 2026). The supervisory board is chaired by Wolfgang Breuer, chairman of the board of Provinzial Holding AG.
