Overview
ÖKowind Neuhof, operating as Ökowind EE GmbH (Ökowind Erneuerbare Energieerzeugungs GmbH), is an Austrian renewable energy company headquartered in St. Pölten. Founded in 2003 by managing director Karl Weiß, the company is active in project development and operation of wind, hydro and solar power plants. Weiß has been involved in renewable energy since the 1980s and implemented the Pottenbrunn wind farm, one of the first wind farms connected to the Austrian grid, in 1998. Ökowind describes itself as a pioneer in the Austrian wind power market. Over roughly 15 years the company developed several wind farms with more than 50 wind turbines in Burgenland and the Greater St. Pölten area, with an installed capacity of more than 110 MW. Ökowind operates 12 of these turbines with a total rated output of 29.35 MW. The company reports an annual electricity output of 70,000 MWh and frames its work around sustainability, security of supply and the replacement of imported nuclear power on the Austrian grid. Its two main tasks are project development for and operation of wind, hydro and solar power plants, and it continues to work intensively on wind power projects in Austria.
History
Ökowind Erneuerbare Energieerzeugungs GmbH, based at 10 Unter-Zwischenbrunn in 3100 St. Pölten, was founded in 2003 by managing director Karl Weiß. Weiß has been involved in renewable energy since the 1980s. The first project idea he implemented was the Pottenbrunn wind farm, establishing Windlicht Erneuerbare Energieerzeugungs GmbH with his first partner, certified engineer Johannes Trauttmansdorff. The Pottenbrunn wind farm was one of the first wind farms in Austria to be connected to the grid and was put into operation in 1998. Since then Weiß has become one of the most well-known figures in the Austrian wind energy industry. The company's two main tasks are project development for and operation of wind, hydro and solar power plants. Over the past 15 years, several wind farms with over 50 wind turbines have been developed in Burgenland and in the Greater St. Pölten area, with an installed capacity of more than 110 MW. Ökowind is responsible for the operation of 12 of these turbines, with a total rated output of 29.35 MW. The company is currently working intensively on wind power projects in Austria. It contributes to security of supply, noting that hydropower has been supplying Austria with clean and emission-free electricity for many years and that around 55% of Austria's energy needs are met by hydropower, a substantial share of which is generated by more than 2600 small hydropower plants. Ökowind also states that the expansion of renewable energies means imported nuclear power can be replaced on the Austrian electricity grid in the next few years.
