History
Öger Group was founded in 1969 by Vural Öger in Hamburg as Reisebüro Istanbul. In the same year, Öger chartered the first aircraft to fly fellow countrymen living in Germany back to Turkey, becoming the first to offer direct flights from Hamburg to Turkey. Following initial success, he founded the tour operator Öger Türk Tur in 1972. In 1982, the flight travel business was expanded beyond an ethnic-based customer model. On 26 May 1986, Öger Tours GmbH was established, making it a pioneer for package holidays from Germany to Turkey. From 1990, additional destinations such as Egypt, Tunisia, the Dominican Republic, and Cuba were offered. In 1994, the Öger Group took over the budget brand att Touristik. In 1996, it founded its own incoming agency Holiday Plan and acquired resort operator Majesty Hotels, both integrated into the group. In 1996, the company made headlines when Birgenair Flight 301 crashed off the Dominican Republic, killing 189 people, including Öger Tours passengers. In 2007, the group's revenue was 722 million euros. In October 2008, Öger Tours signed a contract with NRC, the group of Russian billionaire Alexander Lebedev, for the acquisition of 76 percent of Öger Tours, subject to antitrust approval. However, Lebedev did not pay, so the contract did not materialize. According to Öger, no new buyer was sought. In 2009, with revenue of 256 million euros, more than 400,000 passengers were carried. On 12 July 2010, the sale of Öger Tours GmbH to Thomas Cook Group was announced. Vural Öger subsequently became a member of the supervisory board of Thomas Cook Germany. He resigned his supervisory board position in August 2013 after Thomas Cook relocated the incoming business. On 6 July 2018, BUCHER REISEN GmbH was merged into the also Thomas Cook-owned tour operator Öger Tours GmbH, forming Bucher Reisen & Öger Tours GmbH. On 23 September 2019, the sale of trips was stopped due to the insolvency of Thomas Cook. In the course of the compulsory liquidation of parent company Thomas Cook, on 25 September 2019 Thomas Cook GmbH, Thomas Cook Touristik GmbH, and Bucher Reisen & Öger Tours GmbH filed for insolvency at the competent local court in Bad Homburg; insolvency proceedings were opened on 27 November 2019. Bucher Reisen & Öger Tours GmbH was dissolved on 10 December 2019. ANEX Tour GmbH, based in Düsseldorf, a subsidiary of the Dutch holding NW International B.V. based in Amsterdam, took over the tour operator business of Bucher Reisen & Öger Tours GmbH in November 2019. The Bundeskartellamt approved the takeover on 28 November 2019. The brands "Öger Tours" and "Bucher Reisen" relaunched on 15 January 2020 under the umbrella of ANEX Tour GmbH.
