Overview
The Índice Histórico Español (IHE) is a Spanish academic journal and bibliographic index dedicated to historiography. Founded in 1953 by the historian Jaume Vicens Vives, it is published by the Faculty of Geography and History of the Universitat de Barcelona. The journal's primary purpose is to collect, describe, and critically review new books and articles published in specialized journals, providing a comprehensive overview of recent historical scholarship. Over the decades, it has become a key reference tool for Spanish historians, particularly before the digital era. The IHE is structured into sections including tributes, articles, state-of-the-art reviews, and book reviews. It is published annually, with articles undergoing strict double-blind peer review. The current editorial team is led by director Paola lo Cascio, coordinator Lluis Pons Pujol, and editor-in-chief M. Carmen Riu de Martín. The journal is available both in print (ISSN 0537-3522) and online (ISSN 2339-6989) through the Universitat de Barcelona's journal platform, RCUB. Its content is primarily in Spanish, with some contributions in Catalan and English. The IHE remains an active and respected publication in the field of Spanish historiography.
History
The Índice Histórico Español was founded in 1953 by the prominent Spanish historian Jaume Vicens Vives. Its creation was part of an effort to systematically catalog and review the growing body of historical literature in Spain. Initially published with a four-monthly frequency, it provided scholars with critical summaries of new books and articles. After Vicens Vives's death in 1960, the journal continued under various editorial teams. In 1994, Pere Molas became the director, a position he held for many years. The journal has been published without interruption since its founding, adapting to changes in publishing technology. In the digital age, it moved to an online platform hosted by the Universitat de Barcelona, while still maintaining a print edition. The journal celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2023, marked by a retrospective article in the journal Aracne. Today, it remains a vital resource for historians, offering rigorous peer-reviewed articles and comprehensive bibliographic reviews.
