Overview
Évry Grand Roque (also written Évry 0-0-0) is a French chess club based in Essonne, in the Paris region. It was founded in the early 1970s in the premises of the Maison des Jeunes et de la Culture in Courcouronnes under the name "Grand Roque"; the founders kept those two words when the club moved to the centre of Évry. Legally it is organised as an association under the French law of 1901 and received its sports accreditation from the DDJS in 2001. The club promotes chess throughout the Essonne department and in the commune of Évry in particular, with the active support of the municipality, and it runs activities in schools. The club's first team reached the top division of the French Club Chess Championship (Top 12) in the 2003–2004 season and has remained in the upper pool since. It was French champion in 2008–2009, runner-up in 2009–2010, and third in 2011–2012 and 2012–2013. Its squad has included grandmasters and international masters such as Sergueï Fedortchouk, Arnaud Hauchard, Jules Moussard, Valentina Gounina, Stephen J. Gordon, Eloi Relange, Sabrina Vega Gutierrez and Sophie Milliet. The women's team has won several trophies, including its sixth French title in 2016 against Mulhouse. The club also fields teams in other national and local competitions — in 2015–2016, for example, in Nationale 2, Nationale 4 and Nationale 5 — and claims a strong youth training activity, with a youth team qualified for the Nationale 4 "Ile-de-France" in 2016, which it won. Its last participation in the French Club Championship was in 2017–2018.
History
The Évry Grand Roque chess club was born in the early 1970s in the premises of the Maison des Jeunes et de la Culture in Courcouronnes. Its first name was "Grand Roque", and its founders insisted on keeping those two words when the club moved to the heart of the town of Évry. The club is legally organised as an association under the French law of 1901 and obtained its sports accreditation from the DDJS in 2001. It participates in the promotion of chess throughout the Essonne department and in the commune of Évry in particular. It benefits from the support of the commune of Évry, with which it has an active partnership, and it intervenes notably in schools. The first team gained promotion to the first division of the French Club Chess Championship in the 2003–2004 season and has always participated in the upper pool since. The team was French champion in the 2008–2009 season. It was then runner-up of France in the 2009–2010 season and finished third in the 2011–2012 and 2012–2013 seasons. The squad included several grandmasters and international masters, notably Sergueï Fedortchouk, Arnaud Hauchard, Jules Moussard, Valentina Gounina, Stephen J. Gordon, Eloi Relange, Sabrina Vega Gutierrez and Sophie Milliet. Arnaud Hauchard is currently at the club. The women's team won several trophies, including its sixth French championship title in 2016 against the Mulhouse club. Évry Grand Roque also fields teams in several national and local competitions; in 2015–2016, for example, it entered teams in Nationale 2, Nationale 4 and Nationale 5. The club claims a strong youth-training activity. It entered a single youth team, qualified to play in the Nationale 4 "Ile-de-France" in 2016, and won that local championship in 2016.
