Overview

Éditions Thélème (formally Thélème Productions Éditions) is a French audiobook publishing house founded in 1990 by Adeline Defay. It is regarded as one of the earliest dedicated audiobook publishers in France, predating the entry of larger generalist publishers into the audio format. The company built its reputation on literary classics and contemporary works, offering titles on CD, MP3, and as downloads. Its catalogue is organised into collections covering literature, poetry, philosophy, crime and science fiction, and youth titles. Thélème became widely known in 2006 with the release of an unabridged recording of Marcel Proust's À la recherche du temps perdu, performed by actors including André Dussollier, Lambert Wilson, Robin Renucci, Guillaume Gallienne, Denis Podalydès, and Michael Lonsdale. Since October 2008 it has also published recordings of readings from the Rouge et or edition published by Nathan. The publisher has received literary audio awards, including the Prix du livre audio Lire dans le noir 2012 for La Mort du roi Tsongor by Laurent Gaudé, read by Pierre-François Garel, and has produced audio editions of Goncourt Prize-winning works such as Le Sermon sur la chute de Rome by Jérôme Ferrari and Le Soleil des Scorta by Laurent Gaudé. On 7 July 2022, Éditions Thélème was acquired by the American group RBmedia, making it a subsidiary of a global audiobook company.

History

Éditions Thélème was founded in 1990 by Adeline Defay as Thélème Productions Éditions. It was one of the very first publishing houses in France to offer audiobooks, at a time when the format was still marginal and before larger generalist publishers began to embrace audio. The company established itself as a pioneer in audio publishing. A major turning point came in 2006 with the release of the unabridged recording of Marcel Proust's À la recherche du temps perdu, featuring the voices of André Dussollier, Lambert Wilson, Robin Renucci, Guillaume Gallienne, Denis Podalydès, and Michael Lonsdale. This ambitious project brought the publisher significant recognition. In October 2008, Thélème began publishing recordings of readings from the Rouge et or edition published by Nathan. Over the years, the catalogue expanded to include major classics of French and world literature as well as contemporary works, with collections dedicated to literature, poetry, philosophy, crime and science fiction, and youth. The publisher also produced audio editions of prize-winning books, including Goncourt winners such as Le Sermon sur la chute de Rome by Jérôme Ferrari and Le Soleil des Scorta by Laurent Gaudé, and received the Prix du livre audio Lire dans le noir 2012 for La Mort du roi Tsongor by Laurent Gaudé, read by Pierre-François Garel. On 7 July 2022, Éditions Thélème was acquired by the American group RBmedia, becoming part of a global audiobook company while continuing its publishing activity.
