Overview
Éditions Quart Monde (Les Éditions Quart Monde) is the publishing branch of ATD Quart Monde, the international movement founded by Joseph Wresinski to fight extreme poverty. Created in 1965, the imprint grew out of an earlier editorial effort, Éditions Science et Service, and has since published books, international journals, newspapers and multimedia content that centre the experience and intelligence of people living in poverty. Its catalogue spans titles for all ages and includes works such as "S'allier avec les exclu·es", "Comme on en parle", "En quête de liens qui libèrent", "Sur le sentier de la paix", "École et grande pauvreté : lutter contre les discriminations" and "En finir avec les idées fausses sur la pauvreté". The publisher describes its mission as countering the exclusion of poor people from spaces of speech and as fighting false ideas about poverty. It operates as part of the non-profit ATD Quart Monde movement rather than as a commercial trade house, and its output is distributed through the movement's own bookshop and networks in France and internationally.
History
Éditions Quart Monde traces its origins to the editorial work of ATD Quart Monde, the movement founded in 1957 as Aide à Toute Détresse by Joseph Wresinski together with families living in the Château de France camp at Noisy-le-Grand. In 1964 Geneviève Anthonioz de Gaulle became president of the movement. The following year, 1965, is given as the birth of the publishing house: the movement's editorial branch, then known as Éditions Science et Service, began publishing and distributing works such as La condition sous-prolétarienne (1969). Over time this branch became Les Éditions Quart Monde. The movement itself expanded internationally, with the Fédération Internationale d'ATD Quart Monde created in 1967, and in 1969 Joseph Wresinski proposed the term "Quart-monde" to replace labels such as "cas sociaux" or "familles inadaptées". The publisher's identity is closely tied to this history: it exists to circulate writing grounded in the real life experience of ATD Quart Monde activists and to challenge false ideas about poverty. Its catalogue has grown to include books for all ages, international journals, newspapers and multimedia content, distributed through the movement's bookshop and international networks.
