The official website of the Eden describes it as the oldest cinema in the world and as a cinematographic establishment of the Ville de La Ciotat managed by the association Les Lumières de l'Eden. A page titled 'Histoire d'un sauvetage' recounts that the struggle for the Eden was launched by a handful of young people at the beginning of the 1980s, sustained for more than thirty years by the festival of the association La Ciotat Berceau du cinéma, and reinforced by the decisive action of Les Lumières de l'Eden. The restoration of the Eden-Théâtre, begun in 2012 with the decisive support of Frédéric Mitterrand, Minister of Culture, required 16 months of work. The Eden-Théâtre was rebuilt identically to what it was in 1889, but is now equipped with a projection booth featuring the most modern technologies. Its reopening on 9 October 2013 took place within the festivities linked to Marseille Provence, European Capital of Culture 2013.
