Overview
Écrivaines et Écrivains associés du théâtre (E.A.T.) is a French professional association of contemporary playwrights, founded in 2000 following the États Généraux des Auteurs et de l'Écriture Contemporaine. It is the only French association at national level dedicated exclusively to dramatic authors, bringing together around 350 members across the country. The organisation is committed to defending the rights of theatre writers, representing them within institutions and theatrical life, and supporting the creation of French-language theatrical works. The association was co-founded by Louise Doutreligne, who entrusted the first presidency to Jean-Michel Ribes to ensure its visibility and sustainability. Its successive presidents have included Jean-Michel Ribes, Xavier Durringer, Michel Azama, Jean-Paul Alègre, Laurent Contamin, Louise Doutreligne, Dominique Paquet, Philippe Touzet and Vincent Dheygre. Since June 2025, it has been presided over by Jean-Benoît Patricot. Membership is subject to professional criteria set out in its statutes. E.A.T. has a regional branch in Champagne-Ardenne and five autonomous regional subsidiaries: E.A.T.-Atlantique, E.A.T.-Occitanie, E.A.T.-Méditerranée, E.A.T.-Hauts-de-France Normandie and E.A.T.-Nouvelle-Aquitaine. The association is supported by the SACD, the French Ministry of Culture and Communication, the Paris and Bordeaux education authorities (Rectorats), the DRAC Île-de-France, SOFIA, and the Fondation du Crédit mutuel pour la lecture for its school-based activities. It received the EDF Diversiterre trophy in 2011 for its work promoting reading and dramatic writing among young people in schools, as well as support from the Fondation France Télévisions. Its mission includes defending the dramatic author, promoting knowledge and recognition of contemporary dramatic writing through readings, themed evenings and national events. It secured the dedication of the Théâtre du Rond-Point in Paris to contemporary writing and played a leading role in winning the right to continuing education for dramatic authors. In 2005 it initiated the Grand Prix de Littérature Dramatique, now run by ARTCENA. Its promotional activities have included the Mardis Midi at the Théâtre du Rond-Point until 2012, then the Jeudis Midi at the Théâtre de l'Opprimé from 2013, the Prix des Cent Livres - Emmanuelle Marie in partnership with the SACD, the Question(s) de théâtre thematic evenings, and the Rencontres d'Avignon. The association runs two reading committees—one for general-audience texts and one for young-audience and teenage theatre—open to all authors, members or not, offering critical feedback on unpublished and unperformed manuscripts. It also organises workshops and author residencies in schools across the country and provides information, legal and editorial advice, calls for manuscripts, residency opportunities, commissions and training to its members. After being hosted at the Théâtre du Rond-Point and then at the Théâtre 13/Jardin, E.A.T. is now based in the 17th arrondissement of Paris. It remains a key institutional voice for contemporary French-language playwriting.
History
Écrivaines et Écrivains associés du théâtre (E.A.T.) was created in 2000, following the États Généraux des Auteurs et de l'Écriture Contemporaine. It was co-founded notably by Louise Doutreligne, who entrusted the first presidency to Jean-Michel Ribes to ensure the association's visibility and sustainability. The association was initially hosted at the Théâtre du Rond-Point, then at the Théâtre 13/Jardin, and is now installed in the 17th arrondissement of Paris. Its successive presidencies have been held by Jean-Michel Ribes, Xavier Durringer, Michel Azama, Jean-Paul Alègre, Laurent Contamin, Louise Doutreligne, Dominique Paquet, Philippe Touzet and Vincent Dheygre. Since June 2025, it has been presided over by Jean-Benoît Patricot. Membership is open to theatre authors who meet professional criteria defined in its statutes. The association has a branch in the Champagne-Ardenne region and five autonomous regional subsidiaries. E.A.T.-Atlantique, which brings together 25 authors from the Pays de la Loire, was founded by Jean-Luc Annaix and Françoise Thyrion on 27 March 2010; it has been presided over by Johann Corbard since June 2024 (or 2025, according to the source). E.A.T.-Méditerranée has been presided over by Stephen Pisani since 1 January 2025, succeeding Louise Caron. E.A.T.-Occitanie was founded in 2015 and is currently presided over by Dominique Pompougnac. E.A.T-Hauts-de-France Normandie was founded on 13 October 2005 by Michel Azama, Jean-Michel Baudoin, Christophe Piret, Violaine Debarge and René Pillot; it is now presided over by Éric Boscher. E.A.T-Nouvelle-Aquitaine was created on 21 November 2016 and is co-presided by Philippe Rousseau and Martine Macre. E.A.T. is supported by the SACD, the Ministry of Culture and Communication, the Rectorat de Paris, the Rectorat de Bordeaux, the DRAC Île-de-France, SOFIA, and the Fondation du Crédit mutuel pour la lecture for its school-based actions. It received the EDF Diversiterre trophy in 2011 for its actions in favour of developing reading and dramatic writing among young people in schools, as well as support from the Fondation France Télévisions. The association's mission is the defence of the dramatic author and the knowledge and recognition of contemporary dramatic writing through readings, themed evenings and national events. It obtained the dedication of the Théâtre du Rond-Point in Paris to contemporary writing. It also played a leading role in winning the right to continuing education for dramatic authors. In 2005 it initiated the Grand Prix de Littérature Dramatique, now carried by ARTCENA. Its promotion of contemporary writing has taken the form of the Mardis Midi at the Théâtre du Rond-Point until 2012, and since 2013 the Jeudis Midi at the Théâtre de l'Opprimé, the Prix des Cent Livres - Emmanuelle Marie in partnership with the SACD, the Question(s) de théâtre thematic evenings on aesthetic and artistic questions linked to writing, bringing together specialists and other cultural structures (Maison des Auteurs de la SACD, Théâtre de Boulogne-Billancourt, Théâtre 13, Théâtre de Saint-Maur, l'International Visuel théâtre, la Maison Jean Vilar, Espace EDF Récamier, le Grand Parquet, les Apartés de Baty in partnership with the Institut d'Études Théâtrales Paris 3-Sorbonne nouvelle), and the Rencontres d'Avignon, which have taken various forms over time: meetings, readings and staged readings, literary and dramatic games in partnership with the ISTS, the SACD and the Conservatoire du Grand Avignon. The association has two reading committees: one for general-audience texts and one for young-audience and teenage theatre. They are open to all authors, members or not. These committees allow authors to obtain critical feedback on unpublished and unperformed manuscripts and possibly to be included in the E.A.T. repertoire and/or read in public. The association also organises numerous workshops and author residencies in schools throughout the country. In Île-de-France, it played a determining role in the creation of territorial author residencies set up by the DRAC. It has an information mission for its members: legal and editorial advice, calls for manuscripts, residency and commission proposals, and training. General publications include Quoi de neuf ? L’auteur vivant ! (Paris, L’Avant-scène Théâtre, 2001), Répliques 2002 (Paris, L’Avant-scène Théâtre, 2002), and L’Auteur en première ligne, Histoire et paroles des eat (Paris, L’Av…).
