Overview
ÆON SENDAI (イオン仙台店) was a general merchandise store (GMS) located in Chūō 2-chōme, Aoba-ku, Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. It occupied the Yomiuri Sendai Building and the Shintenmachi Chūō-dōri Building, two connected structures in a block bounded by Aoba-dōri, Higashi-Nibanchō-dōri, Chūō-dōri, and Higashi-Sanbanchō-dōri. The store was operated by ÆON Tohoku Co., Ltd., a regional subsidiary of the ÆON Group. Its predecessor, Daiei Sendai, opened on September 9, 1975, and was a flagship Daiei store in the Tōhoku region. After Daiei's restructuring, the store was rebranded as ÆON Sendai, with a pre-opening on March 11, 2016, and a grand opening on March 12, 2016. It was the oldest ÆON-branded store in the Tōhoku region and, from March 1, 2020, the only former Daiei store operated by ÆON Tohoku. The store closed on February 28, 2025, following the termination of its lease with the Yomiuri Sendai Building. The closure was attributed to the lease ending, not to poor performance. The site is now being considered for redevelopment led by Tokyu Land Corporation.
History
The store that became ÆON SENDAI opened on September 9, 1975, as Daiei Sendai (ダイエー仙台店), also known as Sendai Shoppers Plaza, in the newly completed Yomiuri Sendai Building. It was a major Daiei store in the Tōhoku region. In July 1989, the store was expanded by 2,800 square meters. In the February 1992 term, it recorded its highest sales of approximately 20 billion yen. In 2001, it underwent renovation. On February 27, 2011, it temporarily closed for four days for a full renovation, reopening on March 3, 2011. On March 11, 2011, the Great East Japan Earthquake struck, and the store was closed for two days. It reopened on March 13, 2011, becoming one of the earliest supermarkets in the area to resume operations, with about 3,500 shoppers lining up for daily necessities. This rapid response was attributed to Daiei's experience from the 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake. On March 1, 2016, the store's business rights were transferred to ÆON Retail, and it continued to operate as Daiei Sendai until March 8, 2016, when it closed, marking the complete withdrawal of Daiei from the Tōhoku region. On March 11, 2016, it pre-opened as ÆON Sendai, and on March 12, 2016, it held its grand opening. On March 1, 2020, the business rights were transferred to ÆON Tohoku (renamed from MaxValu Tohoku on the same day). On October 11, 2024, it was reported that ÆON Sendai would close on February 28, 2025, due to the termination of its lease with the Yomiuri Sendai Building. The store closed as scheduled on February 28, 2025. The closure was not due to poor performance. The Yomiuri Sendai Building is now being considered for redevelopment led by Tokyu Land Corporation, with plans to demolish the existing building and introduce tenants, offices, and a hotel.
