Overview
ÆON Akita-Chūo (イオン秋田中央店) is a shopping center located at 5-11 Narayamakawaguchizakai, Akita City, Akita Prefecture, Japan. It is managed and operated by AEON Tohoku Co., Ltd., the Tohoku regional operating company of the AEON Group. The store opened on April 28, 1995 as "Akita Saty," the first Saty store in Akita Prefecture, and was renamed ÆON Akita-Chūo on March 1, 2011, when AEON Retail absorbed Mycal. The facility serves as a regional shopping center with food, daily goods, cosmetics, apparel, home and leisure goods, health and beauty care, a pharmacy, and a large tenant specialty store zone. It also provides services such as drugstore, bill payment, ATMs, water dispensers, EC store pickup, Wi-Fi, AEON Tohoku online supermarket, and tax-free shopping. The store has a long history tied to the former Nichii and Mycal retail networks and is now part of AEON Tohoku's store portfolio. It remains an active commercial facility in Akita City, though sales have declined from the roughly 10 billion yen levels recorded in the late 1990s due to regional economic conditions.
History
ÆON Akita-Chūo originated as "Akita Saty," a shopping center planned by Tohoku Nichii. In September 1991, Tohoku Nichii announced its intention to open a store at Narayamakawaguchizakai in Akita City. The original plan was significantly revised after the Tohoku regional council for large-scale retail stores recommended a 40% reduction in sales floor area and efforts to acquire nearby land failed; a planned cinema complex was also cancelled. Construction began on May 30, 1994, and the store opened on April 28, 1995 as the first Saty in Akita Prefecture. In its first fiscal year ending February 1996, Akita Saty recorded sales of approximately 10.1 billion yen. By the fiscal year ending February 1998, sales reached about 11.5 billion yen, the only store among Mycal Tohoku's locations to exceed 10 billion yen, and it continued to maintain around 10 billion yen in sales until Mycal's bankruptcy in September 2001. The store manager at the time also served as a director of Mycal Tohoku and concurrently headed the North Tohoku block covering Saty and Nichii stores. On September 1, 2001, seven stores operated by Mycal Tohoku, including Akita Saty, were transferred to Mycal Corporation. Mycal filed for bankruptcy on September 14, 2001, but Akita Saty and other stores nationwide continued to operate. On March 1, 2011, Mycal was absorbed by AEON Retail, and Akita Saty was renamed ÆON Akita-Chūo. On March 1, 2020, AEON Tohoku Co., Ltd. was established through the integration of MaxValu Tohoku and the food and daily goods operations of AEON Retail's Tohoku Company; the store's management and food floor were transferred to AEON Tohoku. On September 1, 2021, AEON Tohoku and AEON Retail's Tohoku business headquarters integrated, and the apparel, home and leisure, and H&BC floors of ÆON Akita-Chūo were transferred to AEON Tohoku. On January 10, 2024, Wolt delivery service began at the store. The store's sales today are below the former 10 billion yen level due to regional economic decline.
