Overview
Årsskriftet Critique, often shortened to Critique, is a Danish cultural journal that presents itself as a platform for a more qualified debate on ideas, culture and society. It publishes longer articles primarily from and about the conservative and bourgeois intellectual, cultural and social debate. Its articles cover historical, cultural, political and literary subjects broadly relevant to the journal's field. On its website, the journal Replique appears alongside material from Årsskriftet Critique and contributions from a number of regular online writers. The journal organises a lecture series at Aarhus University in collaboration with Konservative Studenter (Conservative Students), as well as an annual conference. It is currently published by the publishing house Munch & Lorenzen. The journal originates from Konservative Studenter, which was also the publisher of volumes I–V, although the journal was editorially and politically independent of the association and primarily addresses the public social debate rather than the association's other activities. Årsskriftet Critique is also behind the podcast Nej til Nyt. The journal traces its roots to Critique, the member magazine of Konservative Studenter, first published in 1964 under editor Carl Arne Øberg-Pedersen. It was conceived both as a member magazine and as an external organ for the conservative student movement. Its stated purpose was to sharpen political debate, awaken the reader's critical sense towards cheap argumentation and half-truths, and work for the dissemination and stronger marking of bourgeois standpoints. In the late 1960s, under editor and later member of parliament Lars P. Gammelgaard, the magazine established itself as an important bourgeois journal. With the major weakening of the conservative movement at universities in the wake of the radicalisation of student life after the student revolt, Critique ceased publication. In the following period, member magazines were published under a series of different names. In 2001 the magazine began publishing again, this time as a pure member magazine that carried both opinion pieces from members and reports from festive events in Konservative Studenter. In connection with the abolition of postal subsidies, Critique ceased publication from the end of 2003. The magazine was attempted relaunched in 2005 in a new layout with the addition 'magazine for Konservative Studenter in Aarhus'. The attempt was not followed up by further issues, but Critique was once again relaunched as a member magazine in 2007 as a semi-annual publication. At the end of 2007, an initiative was taken to wind down Critique as a member magazine and instead return to the journal's roots as a political journal in the public social debate. Årsskriftet Critique was inspired by academic, conservative journals abroad such as Salisbury Review and the national-conservative journal Nomos in Denmark, and contained longer articles by prominent bourgeois intellectuals, writers, politicians and younger students. Årsskriftet Critique has since established itself as a forum for conservative idea and social debate in Denmark. Since 2011, the yearbook has been supplemented by the free online journal Replique, which focuses on reviews, culture and opinion material. From 2013 onwards, both Årsskriftet Critique and the journal Replique have been published by Munch & Lorenzen. In 2016 a blog section with a number of regular writers was launched.
