Reports of pre-release software still labeled MIUI 15 led commentators to speculate that the name change occurred late in development. Xiaomi did not publicly provide a complete explanation for the cancellation of the MIUI 15 branding.

Critics questioned the extent to which HyperOS was independently developed because its phone and tablet versions retain Android-based foundations. HyperOS-era changes to bootloader unlocking generated criticism from enthusiasts and custom-ROM communities. Restrictions can affect update eligibility, device security features, Google services, and the ability to install modified firmware. Xiaomi has justified tighter controls through security, anti-abuse, reliability, and ecosystem-management concerns.
