Libel litigation over inaccurate crime report
A 2001 WVIR-TV report incorrectly stated that a man's property had been searched and that cocaine had been seized. After the station declined to retract the report, the matter proceeded to court. A jury returned a $10 million verdict in 2003, although a judge later reduced the amount as excessive.
