Western Beef executives said the company had suffered commercially because of perceived ties to organized crime involving the Castellana family. Peter Castellana Jr. said he had removed his father from the firm because of the elder Castellana's association with organized crime and emphasized that the remaining family leadership intended to operate lawfully.
