Arson and fire at the Peru factory
A fire on January 1, 2012, damaged approximately 25 percent of the Westclox factory in Peru, Illinois. Two teenagers were charged with aggravated arson. One responding firefighter suffered a career-ending injury when a hose coupling struck his leg, and one defendant was later convicted and sentenced to six to thirty years without parole.
