Donald MacLeod column and staff departures
After columnist Donald MacLeod published a column about a hypothetical future of Islamic dominance in Britain, editor Ian McCormack asked him to moderate his language. MacLeod refused and resigned. Former editor Brian Wilson was dismissed after criticising the decision, and broadcaster and columnist Maggie Cunningham also left. Free-speech groups criticised the dismissals, while human-rights lawyer Aamer Anwar described the column as Islamophobic. McCormack later acknowledged a serious error of judgement in the episode but defended Wilson’s dismissal as a breach of trust.
