Alleged bribery in Mexico
Investigative reporting alleged that Walmart de México used local intermediaries to pay Mexican officials in connection with construction permits, zoning changes, store siting and other regulatory approvals. The reports said Walmart's internal inquiries had found credible evidence of possible violations of Mexican and United States anti-corruption laws. Walmart stated that it maintained an anti-corruption policy and investigated the allegations. The matter expanded beyond Mexico in the wider Walmart investigation and prompted debate about corporate governance, regulatory enforcement and the effects of foreign retail investment.
