Salt Typhoon cyberespionage incident
In 2025, Viasat was identified as one of the victims of the China-linked Salt Typhoon cyberespionage campaign. Viasat stated that an investigation found unauthorized access through a compromised device, but no evidence that customers were affected. The company reported that it remediated the intrusion and did not detect subsequent related activity.
2022
KA-SAT network cyberattack
On February 24, 2022, a deliberate cyberattack disrupted part of the KA-SAT satellite broadband network operated by Viasat. The incident caused modem outages affecting users in Ukraine and other parts of Europe and became closely associated with the opening phase of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Viasat described the technical nature of the attack in an incident report, while European Union authorities later attributed the operation to Russia.
