Bancopoli and the failed BNL takeover
Unipol’s proposed acquisition of Banca Nazionale del Lavoro became connected with Bancopoli, a wider Italian controversy involving bank ownership contests and alleged improper market conduct. The Bank of Italy rejected the takeover bid, Giovanni Consorte resigned as Unipol chief executive, and the company later underwent leadership changes and restructuring. Consorte was subsequently convicted for insider trading according to the referenced account.
