Association with the Iowa City beer riots
Conrad Graf, the brewery's brewmaster and later owner, was instrumental in inciting an 1884 uprising against Iowa's new prohibition law. The riot injured multiple law officers and city attorneys. One attorney later successfully sued Graf for $7,000.
