  1. 2014

    Federal environmental settlement involving Anadarko

The United States reached a settlement exceeding $5 billion with Anadarko over cleanup obligations connected with historical Kerr-McGee operations. The affected sites included locations associated with Lake Mead contamination, uranium-related waste in and around the Navajo Nation and other former industrial facilities.

  2. 2009

Legacy environmental liabilities and investor litigation

After the Kerr-McGee separation, Tronox inherited extensive historical environmental obligations, including contaminated chemical, radioactive-material and industrial sites. Shareholders sued Anadarko Petroleum, Kerr-McGee's successor, alleging that investors had not been adequately informed about the liabilities transferred to Tronox. The dispute contributed to Tronox's bankruptcy and led to the creation of a litigation trust during its reorganization.
