Overview
Trixie Mattel is the stage identity of Brian Michael Firkus, an American drag performer, singer-songwriter, comedian, television personality, DJ, beauty creator, and entrepreneur. She developed a highly recognizable persona built around exaggerated 1960s-inspired styling, large blonde wigs, sharply graphic eye makeup, bright colors, and a camp interpretation of Barbie-influenced femininity. Her work combines drag performance with stand-up comedy, acoustic pop, folk and country music, online video, television, publishing, live touring, and consumer products. Mattel was raised in Marinette County, Wisconsin, and studied musical theatre at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. She encountered drag through Milwaukee's performance scene and became a regular performer before expanding into regional touring and digital entertainment. Her professional profile grew substantially after she appeared on the seventh season of RuPaul's Drag Race in 2015. Although she was eliminated, returned through the competition's re-entry format, and later exited again, the appearance established her as a notable performer. She subsequently toured with the comedy show Ages 3 and Up and developed a close creative partnership with fellow performer Katya Zamolodchikova. Mattel and Katya became the hosts of UNHhhh, a World of Wonder web series whose unscripted, conversational comedy helped make the pair prominent digital entertainers. The partnership later extended to The Trixie & Katya Show on Viceland, Netflix's I Like to Watch, the podcast The Bald and the Beautiful, live stage productions, newsletters, and two books. During the COVID-19 pandemic, their home-produced series Trixie and Katya Save the World provided a temporary alternative while UNHhhh production was paused. Their first book, Trixie and Katya's Guide to Modern Womanhood, became a New York Times bestseller, and their later workplace-themed book was titled Working Girls: Trixie & Katya's Guide to Professional Womanhood. Music is a major part of Mattel's career. Her early albums Two Birds and One Stone drew on folk, country, acoustic pop, and musical comedy, while Barbara introduced a more electro-folk direction. The double album The Blonde & Pink Albums moved further toward power pop. She has also released cover recordings and a collaborative EP, Full Coverage, Vol. 1. Her documentary Trixie Mattel: Moving Parts followed the professional and personal pressures surrounding her post-Drag Race touring career, while her comedy special Trixie Mattel: One Night Only received a Critics' Choice Television Award nomination. Mattel also operates in beauty and hospitality. She founded Trixie Cosmetics in 2019 and serves as its sole owner and chief executive, using the brand to translate her stage aesthetic into makeup products and colorful, collectible packaging. Her interest in cosmetics predates the company: she worked in beauty retail and studied at beauty school before leaving to participate in Drag Race. She has additionally developed a large YouTube presence focused on makeup, celebrity collaborations, Barbie collecting, dolls, and toy culture. In hospitality, she acquired and renovated a Palm Springs motel that became the subject of the renovation reality series Trixie Motel, which premiered in 2022 and continued through 2024. Other extensions of the persona have included a collectible fashion doll made with Integrity Toys and a vodka collaboration associated with Producer Entertainment Group. Today, Trixie Mattel functions less as a conventional standalone consumer brand than as a diversified creator-led entertainment and lifestyle platform. Its reach comes from the interaction of live performance, recorded music, social video, television, publishing, cosmetics, hospitality, licensing, and collaborations. The business is strongly associated with queer culture, drag, camp, nostalgia, humor, and accessible beauty content.
History
Brian Michael Firkus was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1989 and grew up in Marinette County. He is of Ojibwe descent through his maternal family. The stage name Trixie Mattel developed from personal experiences and cultural references: “Trixie” recalled a nickname used by his stepfather, while “Mattel” reflected his affection for Barbie dolls and the toy company. His grandfather, a country musician, taught him guitar, an influence that later became important to Mattel's musical identity. Firkus studied musical theatre at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee and encountered drag after attending a screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. He began performing at LaCage NiteClub in Milwaukee and became part of the city's drag community, working alongside performers including Kim Chi and Shea Couleé. Before entering national television, he also worked in cosmetics, including positions or freelance work connected with Sephora, Ulta, and MAC. He attended beauty school in 2014 but left when professional opportunities associated with Drag Race took precedence. Mattel first appeared on RuPaul's Drag Race during its seventh season in 2015. She was eliminated early, returned after winning a re-entry challenge, and later left the competition in sixth place. The appearance nevertheless established her nationally and led to the Ages 3 and Up comedy tour. Her collaboration with Katya Zamolodchikova began around the Drag Race media ecosystem and became a defining part of her career. The two hosted UNHhhh, a World of Wonder web series built around improvised conversation and comic observation. Its popularity led to The Trixie & Katya Show on Viceland, and the pair later developed Netflix's I Like to Watch, live theater, books, and The Bald and the Beautiful podcast. Mattel's recording career began with Two Birds in 2017. The album and its follow-up, One Stone, combined acoustic songwriting, folk-country references, and comedy. One Stone became her first album to top a Billboard chart category. In 2018 she returned to RuPaul's Drag Race: All Stars, won the third season, and became the first Indigenous winner of the franchise. She followed the victory with touring, additional recordings, and the documentary project Moving Parts. The documentary premiered at Tribeca in 2019 and examined the demands of touring and the instability behind a polished public persona. In 2019 Mattel founded Trixie Cosmetics, converting her experience in professional beauty and her deliberately artificial stage makeup into a consumer business. Her online channel expanded beyond makeup tutorials into celebrity conversations, doll collecting, Barbie history, baking, and toy reviews. This broadened her appeal beyond drag audiences and reinforced the relationship between her persona, nostalgic consumer culture, and accessible beauty instruction. Mattel's third album, Barbara, arrived in 2020 with an electro-folk direction. During the pandemic, she and Katya created home-produced programming while standard production was interrupted, and they launched The Bald and the Beautiful podcast. Their first book, Trixie and Katya's Guide to Modern Womanhood, was published that year and became a New York Times bestseller. Mattel also continued comedy work through television and streaming specials. From 2021 onward, Mattel expanded into judging, licensing, hospitality, and larger-scale collaborations. She served as a judge on Queen of the Universe, released the covers EP Full Coverage, Vol. 1, and announced The Trixie Doll with Integrity Toys. She also participated in a vodka collaboration associated with Producer Entertainment Group. Her fourth studio project, The Blonde & Pink Albums, was released in 2022 and emphasized power pop. The same period brought Trixie Motel, a renovation series centered on a Palm Springs property that became a hospitality extension of her brand. Mattel and Katya also toured with Trixie and Katya Live and published Working Girls: Trixie & Katya's Guide to Professional Womanhood. Mattel's career remains organized around cross-platform movement rather than a single medium. Drag performance supplies the visual language; comedy and collaboration drive audience loyalty; music, television, books, digital video, cosmetics, collectibles, and hospitality provide separate commercial and creative outlets. Her work is especially associated with camp, queer visibility, nostalgic femininity, and the conversion of a distinctive performer identity into a broad lifestyle enterprise.
