Independent review finds Travelodge failed sexual assault victim 'at every stage'

    Issue disclosure

An independent review led by barrister Paul Greaney KC, published on 1 October 2026, found that Travelodge "fundamentally failed" a woman who was sexually assaulted at its Maidenhead hotel in December 2022 by a man who obtained her room key by falsely claiming to be her boyfriend. The review concluded the chain's security policies at the time were "not fit for the purpose of keeping guests safe", that room intrusions were still being reported at nearly one in 10 Travelodge hotels in summer 2026, and that no policy on violence against women and girls was in place; it made 38 recommendations including requiring ID for room keys. The review credited Travelodge with changes made since March, and interim chief executive Ray Reidy apologised unreservedly, saying significant progress had been made over the past six months with further to go.

    Company response

    • Apology — Travelodge

"I apologise unreservedly on behalf of Travelodge to all guests where we have failed," he said.
    • Remediation — Travelodge

"We have made significant progress in preventing and addressing these issues over the past six months, and we recognise we still have further to go."
    • Ongoing disclosure — Travelodge

Travelodge said a new board committee would oversee the changes, with independent assessments of its progress after six and 12 months.
    • Personnel action — Travelodge

Boydell stepped down as chief executive in August following criticism over the company's handling of safety complaints.

    UK minimum-room-price advertising complaint

The Advertising Standards Authority upheld a complaint against Travelodge over statements presenting allegedly misleading minimum room prices. The matter concerned advertising accuracy and price transparency rather than a product-safety issue.
