Póvoa de Varzim garment dispute
A sweater marketed as Baja-inspired was criticized for resembling a traditional fisherman’s garment from Póvoa de Varzim, Portugal. Burch apologized, the description was changed to reference Póvoa de Varzim, and the sweater was later removed. The municipality announced an out-of-court settlement in November 2021.

Criticism over Romanian design references
La Blouse Roumaine, a community promoting Romanian traditional craftsmanship, argued that a coat in Tory Burch’s Resort 2018 collection closely resembled a Romanian garment and that other pieces also echoed Romanian dress. Burch acknowledged that the Romanian inspiration had not been identified in the collection description and said the brand sought to honor cultures inclusively.
Criticism concerning pottery and logo similarities
The brand also faced online criticism that pottery pieces resembled designs associated with Bordallo Pinheiro, prompting a protest from the owners of Vista Alegre. Observers separately noted perceived similarities between the Tory Burch logo, a Portuguese designer’s logo and the Order of Christ Cross. The available reference does not establish a final legal outcome.
