History
Topsoe was established in 1940 by Dr. Haldor Topsøe in Denmark. During the Second World War, the young company obtained permission to use laboratories associated with the Polytechnic Educational Establishment. In 1943 it moved to facilities in Hellerup, north of Copenhagen, gaining access to equipment that allowed it to broaden its research and consulting work. During the war it provided consultancy services to Swedish companies, with some of the company's Swedish contacts arranged through the Wallenberg group. The company began commercial catalyst production during the 1940s. In 1944 it produced its first small batch of sulfuric-acid catalysts. In 1948 it completed development of its first nickel catalyst and began working with Vargöns AB in Sweden on an ammonia-synthesis catalyst. These activities established the combination of fundamental catalysis research, catalyst manufacturing, and industrial process development that became central to the company's business. After the war, Topsoe participated in technical-development projects in Mexico connected with American financial and development networks. The work included involvement in planning aspects of Mexico's technical development and contact with agronomist Norman Borlaug's wheat experiments in the Sonora region. From the 1950s, the company also renewed scientific and engineering contacts with institutions in the Soviet Union and remained active in international catalysis networks. In 1955 Topsoe established the French subsidiary Haldor Topsøe S.A. and opened a Paris office. The company participated in a range of industrial projects, including the construction of a heavy-water plant in northern France. In 1958 it acquired the Linderupgaard estate near Frederikssund, Denmark; the site subsequently became an important catalyst-production location. International expansion continued in North America. Topsoe opened Haldor Topsoe Inc. in New York in 1961 and acquired land in Houston, Texas, in 1965. The Houston office later became the company's principal United States base, and the office was moved there from New York in 1971. Topsoe also delivered process designs and technologies for major ammonia plants in several countries. The ownership structure changed in 1972, when the business became a public limited company owned equally by Haldor Topsøe and the Italian engineering company Snamprogetti. The headquarters moved from Vedbæk to Søborg in 1973 and then to its present location in Kongens Lyngby in 1974. During the 1980s, Topsoe opened offices in Delhi and Beijing. During the 1990s it added offices and departments in Russia and the United States, including locations in Moscow, Yaroslavl, and Los Angeles. In 2007, Haldor Topsøe repurchased the shares held by the Italian group, which had become part of Saipem through its acquisition of Snamprogetti. The transaction returned the company to the control of the founder's interests. That year, the subsidiary Topsoe Fuel Cell began construction of a Danish production facility for high-temperature solid oxide fuel cells. The fuel-cell initiative extended Topsoe's expertise from industrial catalysts into electrochemical technologies for generating electricity and heat. Topsoe subsequently changed the composition of parts of its catalyst business. In 2017, Umicore agreed to acquire Haldor Topsoe's heavy-duty diesel and stationary catalyst businesses. In 2019, Topsoe sold a 30 percent stake to Singaporean investment company Temasek. Haldor Topsøe, who had remained chairman from the company's foundation, died in 2013 at the age of 99. On 2 June 2020, Roeland Baan succeeded Bjerne S. Clausen as president and chief executive officer. In 2022 the company adopted the shorter Topsoe name.
