History
tn mobile traces its origins to the development of a third mobile network in Namibia. The cellular operation began as Cell One, established in 2007. It was later rebranded Leo and operated as a mobile challenger in a market where mobile communications were already an important part of Namibia's telecommunications sector. Telecom Namibia initially entered cellular communications under the SWITCH brand using CDMA technology. The service was formally operating as Namibia's third cellular provider by the end of 2009 and had attracted approximately 54,000 customers by the middle of 2010. In August 2011, Telecom Namibia converted the CDMA network to GSM, bringing the service onto the more widely used mobile standard and creating a stronger technological base for broader handset compatibility and mobile data development. In 2012, Telecom Namibia acquired Leo. The business was fully incorporated into Telecom Namibia in 2013, after which its mobile operations were presented under the tn mobile brand. This transaction connected the acquired mobile customer base and operating capabilities with Telecom Namibia's national fixed-line network, fibre assets, international connectivity and enterprise relationships. tn mobile consequently became a mobile division rather than a separately independent telecommunications company. Following the integration, Telecom Namibia expanded the mobile operation's network and service capabilities. The company upgraded to 4G LTE and deployed an IMS core, supporting higher-speed mobile data, prepaid LTE devices and fixed-mobile convergence products. The mobile division's role broadened from basic cellular voice services to a combination of voice, broadband and data connectivity. The parent operator's infrastructure programme has been central to the brand's development. Telecom Namibia operates national fibre and backbone facilities, mobile and fixed wireless towers, international connectivity and points of presence serving domestic and regional traffic. These assets have supported efforts to extend coverage to communities outside Namibia's main urban centres, as well as to schools, clinics, lodges, government offices and businesses. The available reference material does not provide a definitive current brand-status statement. It describes tn mobile as the mobile division responsible for Telecom Namibia's mobile voice, data and broadband services, but does not establish whether the name continues to be used as a fully separate consumer-facing identity or has been consolidated into the wider Telecom Namibia brand. Accordingly, the brand is documented as a Telecom Namibia sub-brand with an unknown current standalone status.
