    Controversy over the Mecca Bingo name

    The use of Mecca as the name of a gambling business angered some Muslims because gambling is prohibited in Islam and Mecca is Islam's holiest city. A Mecca Bingo hall in Luton was damaged by bricks on Christmas Day 1997. Community representatives and Mecca executives met in January 1998; the company maintained that the name change from Top Rank was part of a nationwide branding policy.
