Tesla a.s. is a Czech electronics and electrical-engineering company whose name originates from the former Czechoslovak electronics conglomerate. The present company should not be confused with Tesla, Inc., the United States electric-vehicle manufacturer. Tesla a.s. traces its corporate history to Elektra, established on 18 January 1921, and was renamed Tesla on 7 March 1946. A formal founding ceremony was held on 10 August 1946 at the Mikrofon Factory in Prague's Strašnice district. The name referred both to Nikola Tesla, the Serbian-American inventor who had studied briefly in Prague, and, in the political terminology of post-war Czechoslovakia, to the phrase TEchnika SLAboproudá, meaning low-current technology. During the socialist period, Tesla operated as a state-owned industrial conglomerate and became the monopoly producer of a wide range of electronic appliances, components, communications equipment, and electrical products in Czechoslovakia. Its production network extended across the Czech and Slovak parts of the country, including facilities in Liptovský Hrádok, Hradec Králové, Pardubice, Žďár nad Sázavou, Bratislava, and Nižná. The organization manufactured consumer and industrial electronics as well as components such as transistors, integrated circuits, loudspeakers, display units, semiconductor devices, and other low-current technology. It also exported selected products to other Eastern European countries and, in limited cases, to Western markets under other brands. The historical product portfolio included televisions, radio receivers, tape recorders, turntables, cassette decks, compact-disc players, videocassette recorders, loudspeakers, electronic components, and military communications equipment. Tesla a.s. developed from Elektra, a Czechoslovak electrical and electronics enterprise established in 1921.
