Ethylene oxide emissions investigation at Terumo BCT
A 2018 investigation examined atmospheric releases of ethylene oxide, a sterilizing agent used for blood diagnostic and treatment devices, from Terumo BCT's Lakewood, Colorado facility. The investigation reported no increased cancer risk for people in the surrounding neighborhood. The United States Environmental Protection Agency continued to permit annual releases of up to 4,500 kilograms, while Terumo stated that its actual annual release was about 1,100 kilograms and that it was working to reduce emissions.
