Tele2

Tele2 is a Swedish telecommunications company whose consumer and enterprise businesses span mobile communications, fixed broadband, telephony, television, streaming, data-network services and global Internet of Things connectivity. The group is headquartered in Kista Science City in Stockholm and is principally active in Sweden and the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Its Swedish mobile operations are among the country's major network businesses, while its Baltic subsidiaries operate nationwide mobile networks and have introduced 5G services. The company's history is rooted in Kinnevik's effort to challenge incumbent telecommunications providers. The earliest predecessor was Comvik, launched in 1981 as an alternative mobile operator to Sweden's state-owned Televerket. Kinnevik later established Kabelvision, a cable-television business, in 1986 and Swipnet, one of Sweden's first commercial Internet service providers, in 1991. Comvik received a GSM licence in 1988, began GSM operations in 1992 and adopted the Comviq name. Following liberalisation of Sweden's telephone market, the Tele2 business began offering international calls in 1993. In 1997, the Tele2, Comviq and Kabelvision activities were brought together under a common brand structure: Tele2 for fixed services and Comviq for Swedish mobile services. Tele2 pursued international expansion during the late 1990s and 2000s through acquisitions and market entry across Europe and the former Soviet Union. It operated at various times in countries including Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Kazakhstan, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Many of those businesses were later sold or exited as the group concentrated on markets where it could build stronger positions. Transactions included the sale of several western European businesses in 2007 and the disposal of its Russian operations in 2013. Tele2 also sold its Norwegian operations to Telia Company, its Croatian operation to United Group and its stake in T-Mobile Netherlands after that business merged with Tele2 Netherlands. In Sweden, the company increasingly combined network investment with infrastructure sharing. Tele2 and Telenor Sverige established Net4Mobility in 2009 to build and operate a shared mobile network. Tele2 launched commercial 4G services over the arrangement in 2010 and became Sweden's first operator to launch commercial 5G NR service in 2020. The company also participates in shared 3G infrastructure with Telia through SUNAB. In the Baltic markets, Tele2 has expanded LTE and 5G coverage, including spectrum deployments in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. A major domestic transformation occurred in 2018, when Tele2 merged with Com Hem, a Swedish provider of cable television, broadband and telephony. The combination broadened the group's consumer offering and strengthened its position in converged connectivity and entertainment. Com Hem's streaming product Comhem Play+ was opened to non-Com Hem customers in 2020 and was renamed Tele2 Play in 2022. Tele2 developed from a collection of Kinnevik-backed communications businesses created to compete with incumbent operators. Comvik began mobile operations in Sweden in 1981 and later became Comviq after receiving a GSM licence. Kabelvision entered cable television in 1986, while Swipnet began commercial Internet service activity in 1991. Telephone-market liberalisation enabled the Tele2 business to offer international calls from 1993. In 1997, the businesses were organised around the Tele2 and Comviq brands, with Tele2 used primarily for fixed services and Comviq for mobile services in Sweden. The group expanded internationally through acquisitions and new operations. Its historical footprint included much of northern, western and eastern Europe, as well as Russia and Kazakhstan. Tele2 subsequently sold or closed many of those activities, including operations in the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Austria, Croatia, Norway, Russia and the Netherlands. This retrenchment left Sweden and the Baltic states as the group's principal markets. Network sharing became central to Tele2's Swedish model. The company worked with Telia on shared 3G infrastructure through SUNAB and formed Net4Mobility with Telenor Sverige in 2009 for shared 4G infrastructure. Tele2 launched 4G commercially in 2010 and introduced commercial 5G in Sweden in 2020. Similar technology evolution occurred in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, where Tele2 operates mobile networks and has added 5G spectrum and services. The 2018 Com Hem merger expanded Tele2 beyond mobile and fixed telephony into a broader home-connectivity and entertainment proposition. Com Hem's streaming service was later renamed Tele2 Play. The company now serves consumers, businesses and connected-device users through mobile and fixed networks, television and streaming, enterprise communications, data-network services and IoT connectivity.
