Sakamoto family murders and source-protection controversy
TBS recorded an interview with lawyer Tsutsumi Sakamoto concerning his investigation of Aum Shinrikyo and showed the recording to members of the group without his knowledge. The planned interview was not broadcast. Sakamoto, his wife, and their child were later murdered by Aum members. The incident led to intense criticism of TBS's treatment of journalistic sources and editorial safeguards.
