Japanese subsidiary profit-reporting controversy
Sybase disclosed inconsistencies in profits reported by its Japanese subsidiary and restated results for the last three quarters of 1997. The company attributed the issue to five executives who had used side letters to artificially inflate reported profits. A related class-action lawsuit followed, and the five executives were dismissed.
