Political patronage and the replacement by Reemtsma
Sturm's position was undermined by the Nazi regime's patronage relationships with Reemtsma. Payments and political negotiations followed allegations of corruption and SA attacks, and the SA switched suppliers after the purge of its earlier leadership.

SA members were reportedly compelled to smoke Sturm cigarettes, with searches and fines used against those carrying rival brands. SA activists also harassed or attacked retailers selling competing cigarettes, especially Reemtsma products.
