Overview
Storebrand is a Norwegian financial services group whose principal activities are life insurance, occupational and personal pensions, savings, and investment management. Its headquarters are in Lysaker, in the municipality of Bærum outside Oslo. The group serves individuals, employers, institutional investors, and public-sector or corporate customers, with Norway as its historical home market and Sweden as another important market following the acquisition of SPP. The Storebrand name dates from the establishment of Christiania almindelige Brandforsikrings-Selskab for Varer og Effekter in 1847. The company’s broader institutional roots reach further back to 1767, when a compulsory urban fire-insurance arrangement was created in Norway. Over time, these insurance activities developed through consolidation with other Norwegian insurers and financial institutions. Storebrand acquired the remaining interest in the life insurer Idun during the twentieth century, combined with Norden in the early 1980s, and became part of the UNI Storebrand structure after the integration of UNI-related insurance businesses in 1991. The group experienced a major crisis in the early 1990s after an unsuccessful attempt to create a large Nordic insurance group through the proposed acquisition of Skandia, alongside Danish Hafnia and Finnish Pohjola. The failure caused a severe collapse in the value of UNI Storebrand shares. The Norwegian state took control of the company in 1992, and the group underwent a debt restructuring before returning to market trading in 1993. It adopted the name Storebrand ASA in 1996 and expanded into banking through Storebrand Bank. Storebrand has since developed a broader savings and investment platform. Its activities include life and pension insurance, retirement solutions, fund and portfolio management, banking, and selected property-and-casualty insurance operations. Storebrand acquired Delphi funds in 2002, Swedish pension and life-insurance provider SPP from Handelsbanken in 2007, and the value-oriented asset manager SKAGEN in 2017. Storebrand Asset Management later acquired Cubera Private Equity, an Oslo-based investor in private-equity secondaries, in 2019. In 2022 it acquired Kron, a Norwegian digital savings and investment platform intended to make fund investing and pension saving simpler for retail customers. Danica Pensjon Norge was subsequently integrated into the group in 2023. Responsible investment is a prominent part of Storebrand’s positioning. The group publishes information about exclusions and sustainability considerations applied in investment portfolios, with exclusionary themes including coal, oil sands, tobacco, controversial weapons, and serious human-rights violations. Storebrand also issues sustainability and responsible-investment reporting for relevant corporate and investment activities. Its sustainability policies have periodically attracted public debate, particularly over the investment consequences of excluding certain weapons manufacturers. Storebrand is listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange under STB and has been included in major Norwegian equity indices. Its ownership is diversified, with institutional and foreign investors representing a substantial portion of the shareholder base. The company’s main business identity remains that of a Nordic provider of long-term financial security: insurance protection, retirement accumulation, savings, and investment management.
History
Storebrand’s historical development combines Norwegian fire insurance, life insurance, pensions, banking, and investment management. One early institutional predecessor was established in 1767 as a compulsory fire-insurance arrangement for buildings in Norwegian cities. That system later evolved into Norges Brannkasse. The Storebrand name itself is associated with the formation of Christiania almindelige Brandforsikrings-Selskab for Varer og Effekter on 4 May 1847. During the twentieth century, Storebrand expanded through acquisitions and combinations with other insurance businesses. It acquired the remaining interest in Det norske Livsforsikringsselvskab Idun after holding a majority stake from 1923, and acquired the travel insurer Europeiske in 1936. Storebrand and Norden were merged in the early 1980s. Norske Folk and Norges Brannkasse were jointly marketed under the UNI insurance name, and the company adopted the Storebrand name in 1986. In 1991, the UNI insurance businesses were integrated into a new UNI Storebrand group. The most serious turning point came with an attempted Nordic consolidation. UNI Storebrand sought to acquire Swedish insurer Skandia in cooperation with Danish Hafnia and Finnish Pohjola, with the goal of forming a large Nordic insurance group under Norwegian leadership. The transaction failed in 1992. The resulting financial pressure and collapse in the company’s share price led to government control and public administration on 25 August 1992. Investigations into the crisis were later addressed in Norwegian public reports, including NOU 1993:9 and NOU 1994:7. Storebrand restructured its debt successfully and returned to trading in 1993. In 1996 the group became Storebrand ASA and received a government concession to conduct banking activities through the wholly owned Storebrand Bank. A proposed 1997 merger with Christiania Bank og Kreditkasse did not receive the required shareholder majority, despite receiving more than half of the votes. In 1999, Storebrand combined its property-and-casualty insurance activities with corresponding businesses of Skandia and Pohjola to form If P&C Insurance. Storebrand initially retained a substantial stake, which it later sold. The group subsequently rebuilt a separate property-and-casualty insurance operation, while If also entered areas that competed with Storebrand. The modern group increasingly emphasized pensions, savings, and asset management. Storebrand acquired Delphi funds in 2002 and bought Swedish life and pension provider SPP from Handelsbanken in 2007. Odd Arild Grefstad became chief executive in 2012. Further expansion followed through the acquisition of SKAGEN in 2017, Cubera Private Equity in 2019, and Kron in 2022. Danica Pensjon Norge was integrated in 2023. Storebrand’s current identity is built around long-term savings and protection rather than general insurance alone. It serves retail and institutional customers through pension plans, life insurance, savings products, banking, and investment management. Responsible investment has become an important strategic theme, reflected in exclusion policies and public sustainability reporting. The group remains headquartered near Oslo and is listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange under STB.
