Sinking during deportation of civilian internees
Arandora Star was used to deport Italian and German civilian internees, including German refugees, and prisoners of war to Canada. The unescorted ship was torpedoed and sank with the loss of 805 lives. The disaster remains associated with criticism of wartime internment and the decision to transport detainees through a submarine-threatened sea area.
